Solar Energy and Where It Goes - 11 January 2014

On an unexpectedly sunny January Saturday, I was able to return to the streets to continue three of my current documentary projects. The second of these today is the solar farm development by Vogt at Newlands Farm, Fareham. Work is now well under way placing the solar panels on the frames shown in my photographs of 26 December 2013. Packaging cases are strewn around the field, a considerable army of men was at work and strategically placed portable toilets reflected the size of the site. This view shows a detail of the array and two types of pylon (both of which were in place for years before this development). On a day like this, uncommon of late, one might believe in the future of the farm's new 'crop'.

As 2013 drew to a close, construction began on the land of Newlands Farm, Fareham (off Tanners Lane) of an extensive solar farm. Its life is intended to be 25 years after which the land can be returned to agricultural use. In the meantime the design allows grazing to continue. The farmland extends from Newgate Lane to Mays Lane and it is difficult to appreciate the scale of the installation from ground level. This is just another record shot from Newgate Lane. One report suggests that the German-built array will form the shape of a Schnauzer (dog).
