A bleak January day at my local big cemetery (Greenacres) reveals some of my photo stamping grounds. With deep frost and snow on the ground and gravestones we are blessed with some wonderful lighting as the sun tries to peek through the hazy low cloud. A few minutes later it was to snow again.
Below us is the suburb of Lees with St Thomas’s church dominating. Behind that, are our foothills of the Pennines showing the area of my photographic haunts in Saddleworth and its moors to the left; and the Hartshead Pike monument to the right. Behind the Pike hills is another area I frequent for the sake of Ipernity; the reservoirs of Stalybridge.
My home is a five minute walk from here.

ps On inserting this, I realised that I had never posted a photo of Hartshead Pike on here and so I have just found one of my old Panoramio one's. See PiP or last photo.

I finish this week’s photos as I started this series of winter scenes, with another sheep photo. These sheep have not realised there is a nice pile of hay for them just a few hundred metres away. For me, the warm light glistening on the top coats as well as getting the attention of this close sheep makes the picture. The sun is to get a little lower and me a little higher on this hill before its back to a nice warm house and meal.

Dovestones reservoir – A winter Idyll

Another winter look of this local water. Rich reflections coupled with the snow covered moors and blue skies make a winning combination. A few years old now, but as I comment on many photos here; “a beautiful landscape is a beautiful landscape no matter what age.” For those that do not know this reservoir, a wheelchair walk circles the entire Dovestones dam reservoir and it is about 2.6 miles. See my PiP for part of the path just right of the trees you see here. That being said, it was taken three years after this one and so has quite a different look to it.

We think it was cold this year, but a few years back it was even colder up here in Saddleworth. Here we are back again at the second reservoir in the Dovestones chain, called Yeoman Hey. I will let the sun, snow, ice, shadows and mist talk for themselves.

A lone tree in winter.

A lone tree that I have known most of my life. It still sits forlornly in my local valley not far from where I was brought up as a boy. I have seen this valley bottom transformed from a wild wilderness, to a mini golf course and then into a lovely natural park-way which is now part of the ‘Oldham Way’ long distance walk (for us anyway :)) enjoyed by many local walkers and dog walkers alike. The tree however is now a shadow of even the one you see here on which birds used to sing. Just a dead stump about half the size of this younger self.

A walk around Dovestones

Only metres away from the very lone tree that started my photography hobby on its way, here we are on the higher round walk around this now famous reservoir. This scene from 2013 has altered a little because the stand of high pine trees to the left of the fence has been largely replaced by more native deciduous trees.
The bench, like many around here has been placed as a memorial for someone.

Another local scene albeit set in a rather artistic way here, taken in winter conditions way back in 2009. The children are gathering up snow for their snow-ball fight. I am walking down our nearby linear park walk towards the suburb of Springhead.

Its winter again and here we see an appropriate view of one of the reservoirs of the Dovestones chain in Saddleworth taken some years back. Ahead we can just see the dam wall of the next reservoir, Greenfield reservoir. The main path here runs along the left side of the water. In normal times this is a quite place but at the moment more people than ever try to get here to enjoy the limited exercise allowed.

After a night of local heavy snow we get some sun and it’s time to play. A scene here which reminds us of the best of our winters, mixed with poignancy in these days of pandemic; however the sentiment and fun lives on as can be seen by this winking snowman.

Long, long ago, - as the carol goes, but this shows a nicer side of those cold days with this lovely warm sunset. Taken just 15 minutes from my home after several days of very cold freezing weather. A nice layer of new snow and light competes for attention with the tree and wall.

In the middle of our winters of yesteryear we see that life could get difficult at times. Taken just minutes from my doorway, it might as well be the Alaskan high north. This gentleman had a dog with him somewhere as I remembered. One thing for certain, the photo is not so old that he was walking to work.

An unusual view from me of the high view over Dovestones Reservoir and looking up Chew Valley on the right. Brought about by a quick dash up here to catch the snow and sunset, this view looked quite nice. The two cliff faces hides old stone quarries of long ago used for the four dams that block the two main valleys here.

Here we are looking down onto the Dovestones area Binn Green carpark with one of the three reservoirs in view As a back-drop we have of course the western Pennine range, known here as the Saddleworth Moors.

Golly, it's cold out here and the grass is frozen, so this daily extra feed comes in real handy. These two local horses breath clouds of hot air as they grab some straw whilst ignoring my presence. Seen on my local walk.

It may be cold but at least its dry, these sheep may be thinking. We see here a scene taken again, only 30 minutes walk from my front door. The background tree and fences are favourite past photo subjects for me. As I took this, some parts of our country were having vey heavy snowfalls.

Another isolation walk on our local linear railway walk, now in the Winter time. This was taken just a week or so ago now and although it has snowed quite heavy in some area’s yesterday, we have none here.
No children on this photo but as we passed here again a day or so back, there were a few braving the cold with their mums.
