As the glacier retreats the mountainsides have become unstable. There have been major landslides and the popular excursions on the glacier have become dangerous. In 2007 two German mountaineers disapperared without trace.&lt;br /&gt;

Since this photo was taken 2 more eruptions have occurred, the latest started yesterday (16.07.25). This time there's no infrastructure in danger but gas pollution is at the highest level of all 9 eruptions, partly owing to unfavourable wind direction. Yet after the initial evacuations Grindavík and the Blue Lagoon are already back in business (17.07.) ;-)&lt;br /&gt;

In autumn 2024 the area experienced a change with considerably heightend activity in many of the geothermal features. The "sandwich" structure of tertiary basalts, andesite, numerous rhyolithic layers and gabbro intrusions makes it highly interesting for geologists.&lt;br /&gt;
