An outlet glacier of Vatnajökull, Svinafellsjökull comes down from Iceland's highest mountain Hvannadalshnúkur (2110m) which sits on the caldera rim of Öræfajökull volcano.
As the glacier retreats the mountainsides have become unstable. There have been major landslides and the popular excursions on the glacier have become dangerous. In 2007 two German mountaineers disapperared without trace.

Lónsfjördur is a brackish lagoon, separated from Lónsvík by a narrow spit. In summer there are thousands of whooper swans and wading birds.

Hverfjall is a tuff ring near Lake Mývatn that was created ca. 2500 years ago in a massive phreatomagmatic eruption (hot magma reacting with groundwater). It is part of the Krafla volcanic system.

On the left in the PiP and just SE of Hverfjall is another tuff ring, 6600 years old Lúdent.. The big mountain in the background is Búrfjell, a 959m high tuya (table mountain created by volcanic eruptions under a glacier)

Das Hochtemperaturgebiet Hverir (auch Hverarönd oder Námaskarð genannt) liegt am Fuß des Námafjall und ist Teil des Krafla- Vulkansystems. Dass die Gegend vuilkanisch sehr aktiv ist, hört und riecht man eindeutig;-)

View over Reykjanes peninsula and the Sundhnùkagígar lava fields.
Since this photo was taken 2 more eruptions have occurred, the latest started yesterday (16.07.25). This time there's no infrastructure in danger but gas pollution is at the highest level of all 9 eruptions, partly owing to unfavourable wind direction. Yet after the initial evacuations Grindavík and the Blue Lagoon are already back in business (17.07.) ;-)

This little kiosk used to be an icecream parlour and sported various colours over the years (pink, red...). In winter 25 it was yellow and housed a kebab shop:-)

Haukadalur high temperature geothermal area is known for its geyers, mudpools and hot springs.

In autumn 2024 the area experienced a change with considerably heightend activity in many of the geothermal features. Strokkur geyser www.ipernity.com/doc/523247/36833892 erupts more often and Blesi (see note) which used to be a very calm hot spring has starting boiling.

Skarðsheiði and neighbouring Hafnarfjall are the remains of an extinct, 4-5 million years old late pliocene central volcano south of Borgarfjörður.
The "sandwich" structure of tertiary basalts, andesite, numerous rhyolithic layers and gabbro intrusions makes it highly interesting for geologists.
