In a natural glacier cave at approx. 2,500 metres above sea level. It is best not to go into the rear right-hand section. There is a huge slab of ice hanging there. (On the left in the picture with a head torch: my wife).

In front of a frozen rapid, deep inside a glacier. A mirror-smooth obstacle in our path. But somehow we managed to continue, otherwise we wouldn't have been able to place lamps at the back of the icefall.

Vor einer gefrorenen Stromschnelle, tief im Innern eines Gletschers. Ein spiegelglattes Hindernis auf unserem Weg. Aber irgendwie ging's weiter, sonst hätten wir hinten am Eisfall keine Lampen legen können.

A magical place deep inside the glacier. This is by no means the source of the glacier stream. Only this waterfall in the accessible area, where cold air penetrates, is frozen. Deep underground, the water continues to gurgle even in winter. It is a little eerie.

Ein magischer Ort tief im Innern des Gletschers. Man ist hier keineswegs an der Quelle des Gletscherbachs. Gefroren ist nur dieser Wasserfall im zugänglichen Bereich, wo Kaltluft eindringt. Tief im Untergrund gurgelt das Wasser auch im Winter weiter. Etwas unheimlich ist das schon.

In the entrance area of a natural glacier cave at approx. 2,500 metres above sea level. This spot is safe because the ceiling is compact, with no ice sheets that could break off.

But the bare ice floor is slippery as glass. It can only be walked on with crampons or ice cleats. In addition, before each step, you have to test whether there is a cavity underneath that you could fall into by tapping the ground. At these temperatures, water in your shoes inevitably leads to severe frostbite. Here inside, you are completely on your own.

Im Eingangsbereich einer natürlichen Gletscherhöhle auf ca. 2.500 Metern Seehöhe. An dieser Stelle ist es sicher, weil die Decke kompakt ist, ohne Eisplatten, die sich lösen könnten.

Aber der blanke Eisboden ist spiegelglatt. Er ist nur mit Grödeln oder Steigeisen begehbar. Außerdem muss man vor jedem Schritt durch Klopfen testen, ob ein Hohlraum darunter ist, in den man einbrechen könnte. Bei diesen Temperaturen führt Wasser im Schuh unweigerlich zu schweren Erfrierungen. Hier drinnen ist man ganz auf sich allein gestellt.

In a natural glacier cave at approx. 2,500 metres above sea level. In summer, vast quantities of meltwater pour out of this gate. Note the hanging ice sheets on the ceiling. There is an acute danger to life below, because a glacier also moves in winter. Such sheets can break loose at any time and crush you with their weight of several tonnes.

Am Eingang einer natürlichen Gletscherhöhle auf ca. 2.500 Metern Seehöhe. Im Sommer ergießen sich aus diesem Tor Unmengen an Schmelzwasser. Man beachte die hängenden Eisplatten an der Decke. Darunter ist akute Lebensgefahr, denn ein Gletscher bewegt sich auch im Winter. Solche Platten können sich jederzeit lösen und einen mit ihrem tonnenschweren Gewicht erschlagen.

These boulders of ice travelled through the glacier for several centuries before coming to ground here in the ablation zone. In the depths of winter, it is quiet there. But such formations serve as a reminder of the constant need for caution. (The cave entrance is in the background on the left.)

Diese Eisbrocken waren mehrere Jahrhunderte im Gletscher unterwegs, bis sie hier in der Zehrzone zu Boden gingen. Im tiefen Winter ist es still dort. Aber solche Gebilde erinnern an die stets nötige Vorsicht. (Im Hintergrund links die Höhleneingang.)

Skilled skiers can reach 100 km/h on this speed measuring track on the Seiser Alm. It's very comfortable that you don't have to brake at the bottom because you're riding up an opposite slope. (My time: only 84 km/h. I don't dare go any faster).

Könner schaffen auf dieser Speed-Messstrecke auf der Seiser Alm locker 100 km/h. Sehr angenehm ist, dass man unten nicht bremsen muss, weil man einen Gegenhang hinauffährt. (Meine Zeit: Nur 84 km/h. Mehr trau’ ich mich nicht.)
