I just needed something completely different for a change, and found this Frilled Lizard taken at the Calgary Zoo on 12th March. Feels strange to look at something that doesn't live in the forest here.

Unfortunately, seen at the Zoo a few days ago, not out in the wild. Ones that I do see in the wild are always far, far away. I managed to keep fences and sheds out of the background, so that it would look as natural as possible.

A spectacular resident of the Calgary Zoo, enjoying some time outdoors.

"De Brazza's Monkey (Cercopithecus neglectus) is an Old World monkey that gets its name from French explorer Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza. Locally known as swamp monkeys, they are often found in wetlands in central Africa. It is very hard to find due to its good hiding abilities, and so there is not an accurate species count.

This guenon has grey agouti fur with a reddish brown back, black limbs and tail and a white rump. A white stripe runs down its thigh, and an orange crescent-shaped marking appears on its forehead. Its white eyelids match its muzzle and beard. Both sexes have cheek pouches in which to carry food while they forage, and males have a blue scrotum.

De Brazza's Monkey ranges across the swamps, bamboo and dry mountain forests of Angola, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Congo, The Democratic Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia, Gabon, the Cherangani Hills of Kenya, Sudan, and Uganda.

De Brazza's Monkey lives for about 22 years. It is a shy, territorial monkey that lives in small social groups." From Wikipedia.

For a complete change from owls and other birds, here is a beautiful Flamingo from the Calgary Zoo, lol.

"When not eating or preening, flamingos will sleep, facing the wind, head tucked under their wings, usually standing on one leg, with the other leg tucked up under their feathers. They do this to conserve warmth, whether they're in a warm or cool climate."

Northern River Otter / Lutra canadensis

This is the only photo I have of an Otter - and unfortunately it was taken at the Calgary Zoo : ) Taken through very dirty glass and snapped so quickly when the animal climbed out of the water for a couple of seconds. The original was so blown out, almost totally white. Amazes me what can be brought out of an image when so little can be seen. I am assuming that this captive animal is a Northern River Otter (Lutra canadensis).

I couldn't get a decent shot of the animal because of the wide, metal fence, so decided I'd go just for the foot! No sign of Malti, the new baby Asian Elephant, but I suspect that they were keeping her inside, seeing as we had a fall of snow the previous night and it was rather chilly.

These birds usually look very sleek, so this one caught my attention with its ruffled neck feathers. I really should remember to call in and see them each time I go to the Zoo, to check out the lighting. I was quite lucky this day.

I have never seen a live Porcupine in the wild (just roadkill) but came across this one at the Calgary Zoo the other day. I have seen some evidence of wild Porcupines - their burrows and stripped trees.

These Owl Butterflies are native to Central and South America. Their name is derived from the eyespots on their wings, which are used to scare away predators. This was photographed at the Calgary Zoo Butterfly House, which has recently been renovated and looks beautiful.

African Wild Dogs are also known as Painted Dogs. Their habits are similar to those of the Wolf. Their numbers have been declining in the wild in Africa and they are now the rarest large carnivore in the whole of Africa. The Calgary Zoo has a pack of six males, named Watson, Waldo, Weasley, Warner, Wilson and Wheaton.
