Mountaineers during their morning briefing in front of the Münchener Haus. This refuge has been established 1897 and is the highest situated alpine hut of the German Alpine Club. It's not possible to make bookings. You simply have to be there early enough and to line up.

The tower behind the hut is the Meteorological Station, which was inauguratetd in the year of 1900. Both buildings stand in crass contrast to the very modern new top terminal of the Eibsee cable railway, which shall be opened in December, 2017. Here the topical state:

Bergsteiger bei der morgentlichen Lagebesprechung vor dem Münchener Haus. Dies wurde 1897 als höchstgelegene Schutzhütte des Deutschen Alpenvereins eröffnet. Übernachtungen können nicht reserviert werden. Man muss einfach rechtzeitig dort sein und für's Einchecken Schlange stehen.

Der Turm hinter der Hütte ist die Meteorologische Station, die im Juli 1900 eingeweiht wurde. Beide Bauwerke stehen in krassem Kontrast zu der hochmodernen neuen Bergstation der Eibsee-Seilbahn, die im Dezember 2017 eröffnet werden soll. Hier der aktuelle Stand:

Direkt unterhalb des Zugspitzgipfels. Vielleicht nicht mit der typisch bayrischen Biergartenatmosphäre, aber in Anbetracht der widrigen Umstände ein respektabler Versuch.

Entering the Zugspitze from the Austrian side, you will not simlpy arrive in Germany, but in the Free State of Bavaria. (Bavaria is of course a part of the Federal Republic of Germany. But a very special one - with it's own dialect and own traditions. With this knowledge in mind, the danger notice has some double entendre: "Be carefully! Alpine Terrain. Descent for mountaineers only. Danger of falling.")

Wenn man die Zugspitze von der österreichischen Seite her betritt, kommt man an dieser Treppe vorbei, die ins offene Gelände hinunter führt. Man mag schmunzeln ob der Doppeldeutigkeit der beiden Schilder nebenbeinander.

When the lowermost crossing of the gap is already impossible, you'll find an alterntive somewhat higher, where it is more shadily.

Wenn die untere Querung der Randkluft bereits unmöglich ist, gibt es weiter oben, wo es schattiger ist, noch eine Alternative.

Even if the glacier is shrunken very much, it is still rather large. The picture shows the big and very dangerous gap between the glacier and the rock. (You may fall down there 10 - 20 meters.) The mountaineers have to cross it in some way, before the can continue their way up. Each year there is a final date for this action, when the gap has become to broad.

Auch wenn der Gletscher in der vergangenen Jahren stark abgeschmolzen ist, ist er immer noch recht ausgedehnt. Im Bild sieht man die breite und sehr gefährliche Randkluft, die es zu überwinden gilt, bevor man die Klammerleiter hinaufsteigen kann. (Die Kluft ist bis zu 20 m tief und wird unten naturgemäß sehr eng.) Jedes Jahr gibt es einen Endtermin, nach dem eine Überquerung unmöglich ist, weil die Kluft zu breit geworden ist.

Later on it's getting very slippy. Without climbing irons you need an ice axe, or reliable hiking sticks as a minimum.

Später wird es recht steil und rutschig. Wenn man keine Steigeisen untergeschnallt hat, braucht man einen Pickel oder mindesten gute Wanderstöcke, um Halt zu finden.

You're never alone there. The refuge "Höllentalangeralm", which is the normal starting point for those tours, has a capacity of 106 beds. In addition there are hard-boiled mountaineers, which start at the very bottom.

Allein ist man dort selten. Die Höllentalangerhütte als Ausgangspunkt für alle Bergsteiger hat 106 Schlafplätze. Hinzu kommen die ganz harten Burschen, die in einem Rutsch vom Parkplatz her aufsteigen.

From this point the mountaineers normally use climbing irons and walk as a rope team. In late summer, when the snow layer has softened, it is also possible to go solo. At that time tentative crevasses are to be seen easily.

Ab hier geht man normalerweise mit Steigeisen in Seilschaften. Im Spätsommer, bei weicher Altschneedecke, kann man den Steigspuren aber auch ohne Eisen und Seilschaft folgen. Dann sieht man eventuelle Gletscherspalten sehr gut.

Prior to climb the glacier the mountaineers have to cross a large field of rubble, the Höllentalkar. On sunny days it is rather warm here, because the warmed up air rises from below.

Zuvor ist allerdings noch ein großes Geröllfeld, das Höllentarkar, zu queren. Bei sonnigem Bergwetter ist es hier recht heiß, weil die erwärmte Luft den Hang hochsteigt.
