john smyth pigott, who caused riots in upper clapton after proclaiming himself the new messiah and son of man in 1902 . there was later trouble with suicides and sex at his somerset commune, the abode of love, though the latter wouldn't raise too many eyebrows today. oddly enough if you google him you get all sorts of pakistani moslem youtube stuff : apparently he's still a contentious figure there for complicated political and religious reasons.

the figures of the 4 apocalyptic beasts representing the apostles stand in bronze at the top of the tower. the church was the "cathedral" of the leader of the agapemonite cult, built in 1892-5 by joseph morris of reading for the followers of henry james prince, as his "ark of the covenant", from which he was eventually turned out for not only sexual misbehaviour, but announcing his own divinity.
it later became the church of the good shepherd, and is now the cathedral of eastern european catholics of some sort.
