One of our favourite tours for training: The fixed rope route Pfeilspitzwand-Klettersteig in the Zillertal (Tyrol, Austria), combined with the upper Astegg-Klettersteig. The total of 540 metres of climbing in difficulty C/D are exactly to our liking in the most beautiful nature.

Eine unserer Lieblings-Touren zum Trainieren: Der Pfeilspitzwand-Klettersteig im Zillertal (Tirol, Österreich), in Kombination mit dem darüber liegenden Astegg-Klettersteig. Die 540 Klettermeter in der Schwierigkeit C/D sind genau nach unserem Geschmack in der allerschönsten Natur.

An 183 m long tunnel built by Austrian soldiers during the First World War as a bulletproof access to the Cellon shoulder. Mountain guides of the Austrian army cleared the tunnel of debris in 1986/87 and insured it with steel ropes and iron clamps. This is how Austria's first and only historically reconstructed and underground via ferrata was built.

With 160 metres of climbing, this route is the easiest access to the Via ferrata senza confini above.

Ein 183 m langer Stollen, den österreichische Soldaten im Ersten Weltkrieg als schusssicheren Zustieg zur Cellonschulter gebaut haben. Bergführer des österreichen Heeres räumten den Stollen 1986/87 vom Geröll und versicherten ihn mit Stahlseilen und Eisenklammern. So entstand der erste und einzige historisch rekonstruierte und unterirdisch angelegte Klettersteig Österreichs.

Dieser Steig ist mit 160 Klettermetern der einfachste Zustieg zum darüber liegenden Weg ohne Grenzen.

View from the summit of the Tschenglser Hochwand southeast to the Schafbergspitze, the Angelus and the Vertainspitze with their steep hanging glaciers. All of them belong to the Ortler group in National Park Stilfser Joch (South Tyrol, Italy).

From Sulden (1.875m) a chairlift leads to 2.348 m altitude. From there you hike on your own feet in a long tour to the Düsseldorf Lodge at 2.728m. There the air becomes already thin. Below the high wall to the north, at 3,004m, is the entrance to the highest via ferrata in the Alps. Due to its difficulty we had no nerves to take pictures while climbing. We were also wet by rain in between, which made the rock unpleasantly slippery. Pictures of the via ferrata are only available after a possible repetition of the tour.

Blick vom Gipfel der Tschenglser Hochwand nach Südosten auf die Schafbergspitze, den Angelus und die Vertainspitze mit ihren steilen Hängegletschern. Allesamt gehören zur Ortlergruppe im Nationalpark Stilfser Joch (Südtirol, Italien).

Von Sulden (1.875m) führt eine Sesselbahn auf 2.348 m Höhe. Von dort geht es auf Schusters Rappen in einem langen Hatscher zur Düsseldorfer Hütte auf 2.728m. Dort wird die Luft schon dünn. Unterhalb der nördlich davon liegenden Hochwand ist auf 3.004m der Einstieg zum höchstgelegenen Klettersteig der Alpen. Aufgrund seiner Schwierigkeit hatten wir keine Nerven, beim Klettern noch Fotos zu machen. Außerdem wurden wir zwischendurch von Regen eingenässt, der den Fels unangenehm rutschig machte. Bilder vom Klettersteig gibt es also erst bei einer eventuellen Wiederholung der Tour.

The poor remainder of the Zaytal Glacier at the northwestern flank of the High Angelus. Formerly passable, today one rises there only under danger of death. From the left, large rock formers regularly rumble down because the permafrost soil also thaws.

Der kümmerliche Rest des Zaytalferners an der Nordwestflanke des Hohen Angelus. Früher begehbar, steigt man dort heute nur noch unter Todesgefahr auf. Denn von links poltern regelmäßig große Felsbrockern herunter, weil der Permafrostboden ebenfalls auftaut.

The climbing route crosses a dome of rock, which is quite unique. There is another picture of it on the web. But on this first orientation tour I didn't manage to get to the necessary PoV. For this you need time and a different climbing equipment.

Die Kletterroute durchquert einen Felsendom, was ziemlich einzigartig ist. Es gibt ein anderes Bild davon im Web. Es ist mir bei dieser ersten Orientierungstour aber nicht gelungen, zu dem dafür erforderlichen PoV zu gelangen. Dazu braucht man Zeit und eine andere Kletter-Ausrüstung.

Our real destination on the day we happened to pass the avalanche:
The dam wall of the Schlegeis reservoir in the Zillertal (Tyrol, Austria). With a height of 130 m and a width of 725 m, it is the largest dam wall in Tyrol. The reservoir was built in 1965-1972 and contributes to Tyrol's electricity requirements being covered 100% by hydroelectric power.

Unser eigentliches Ziel an dem Tag, als wir zufällig an der Lawine vorbeikamen:
Die Staumauer des Schlegeis-Stausees im Zillertal (Tyrol, Austria). Mit 130 m Höhe und 725m Breite ist sie die größte Staumauer in Tirol. Der 1965-1972 erbaute Stausee und trägt dazu bei, dass Tirol seinen Strombedarf zu 100% aus Wasserkraft deckt.

In Tristans Kirchbogenensteig in Steiermark (Austria) one moves a lot in a very steep rock face. Under the soles of the feet it whistles down decently. You have to like that. Good, if you have practiced a little before:
