The Pajštún gargoyles, famously known as the Pajštún lions, are iconic stone corbels located on the upper southern section of the west wing at Pajštún Castle in western Slovakia. These late-Renaissance lion heads originally served a dual purpose: supporting the weight of the upper bay windows while functioning as decorative elements to direct rainwater away from the stone masonry. Today, the ruins serve as a highly popular tourist spot and a favorite stop for hikers, as the castle sits directly along the main trail networks traversing the Little Carpathians.

Although a devastating blast by Napoleon’s troops in 1809 reduced the fortress to ruins, several of the grimacing stone lions still remain precariously perched high on the crumbling western walls. Over the centuries, some of the carvings have fallen due to erosion, with one well-preserved piece now safely on display at the nearby Stupava Museum. Visitors trekking this famous route are advised to exercise caution when viewing the remaining gargoyles from below, as the surrounding masonry is highly vulnerable to falling stones.

The monks walk barefoot.

They walk in the grey morning when the dirt is cool, carrying their lacquered bowls through the dust. The Buddha did not wear shoes, and they do not wear them now. It is a simple matter of humility, a radical shedding of the self. To feel the earth beneath the feet is to know it, turning a simple journey into a meditation on mindfulness and transient grace.

Then the British came with their heavy leather boots. They walked into the temples and refused to take them off, treating the native custom as servile. It sparked the fierce "Shoe Question," a quiet war for dignity led by monks who protected their shrines from imperial desecration. The British kept their boots, but they lost the country.

Now the monks still walk the roads without shoes. The skin on their soles is thick and hard, yet they press directly against the soil, leaving no barrier between the spirit and the earth.

Wood carving is part of Slovak folk handicraft. Wood has always shaped the economy and daily life of the mountain people, here in Liptov, in northern Slovakia.

The statue depicts a player of the fujara, a distinctive overtone flute with a sound found nowhere else. Its main tube measures 160 to 200 cm, which is why it is often called the queen of the flutes; it was proclaimed a UNESCO Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2005 and inscribed on the Representative List in 2008.

The statue stands in the protected, still-inhabited wooden mountain village of Vlkolínec, about which I wrote before.

At Devín in Bratislava, the Morava River meets the Danube, creating a striking contrast between their waters. The Morava is often noticeably muddier and more brownish, carrying fine sediment from its drainage basin, whilst the Danube can appear clearer and more blue-green.

The two waters do not mix immediately. Differences in flow, temperature, and sediment allow the contrasting colours to remain visible for a while before gradually blending downstream. This creates the distinctive two-coloured water effect that can be seen at the confluence, especially from above.

The Morava also forms part of the Slovakia–Austria border here, making the meeting of the two rivers both a remarkable natural sight and an important geographical landmark.

This is one of my favorite shots from Myanmar—just a quiet, fleeting glance from a kid hiding behind some woven stalks. To him, I was probably the oddest thing he’d seen all week, since tourism hadn't really touched his village yet. It was right at the dawn of the country's democratic opening, and you could genuinely feel that buzz of new possibilities reaching all the way up into the mountains. But knowing how brutally things have regressed since the coup, the photo hits differently now. He’d be a young adult by now, and I always wonder what kind of reality he’s trapped in today.

The Mireuk Daebul at Bongeunsa — a 23 m stone Maitreya, the tallest stone statue in Korea, carved under Master Yeongam from 1986 to 1996 with donations from over 10,000 temple members and dedicated to Korean reunification. The temple itself dates to 794 and was the head temple of Korean Seon Buddhism from 1551 to 1936 — now sitting a few hundred metres from the COEX mall in Gangnam.

The "hat" is a stone canopy, descended from the honorific parasol held over rulers and holy figures — and it also keeps rain off the face.

Juráňova dolina is a hidden natural jewel located in the northernmost part of Slovakia, right next to the Polish border. Roháčske plesá are a chain of glacial mountain lakes in the Western Tatras, in the Roháčska valley, beneath peaks such as Ostrý Roháč (2,087 m) and Plačlivé (2,125 m). The word pleso means a mountain glacial lake, so the name refers to the lakes of the Roháče area. They are special because the lakes are arranged in a dramatic stepped formation, one above another, which gives the place a very distinctive alpine character. For visitors, the appeal is not just the scenery but also the sense of remoteness, clear air, and classic high-mountain atmosphere that makes the area one of the most admired hikes in Slovakia.

In Slovakia, the linden (usually Tilia cordata, the small‑leaved lime) is not just a common tree, but a national emblem and an ancient Slavic symbol. It has been associated with peace, unity, love, and protection, and was venerated long before modern national awareness.

Historically, communities gathered under large linden trees for meetings, celebrations and even legal proceedings, and Slovak Romantic writers used the linden as a symbol of homeland and destiny. The tree’s heart‑shaped leaves and fragrant blossoms appear in Slovak art, literature and design as motifs of identity and endurance.

Practically, linden blossom is still used in herbal teas for calming and medicinal purposes, and its pollen contributes to distinctive local honey. In many towns and villages in Slovakia and neighbouring Czech lands, linden trees are planted near churches, in central squares, or along streets, becoming natural gathering points and living monuments of cultural heritage.
