Scorpions were part of everyday life in ancient Egypt. Their nature is to hide during the day and come out at night, habits that would have worried people. Ancient Egyptians therefore sought ways to prevent scorpion stings and treat them when they failed to avoid these venomous arachnids. Protection could come from eating a scorpion, drinking liquid poured over an image like a healing stela, or just recording a spell on a stone, as seen here.
Ancient Egyptians therefore sought ways to prevent scorpion stings and treat them when they failed to avoid these venomous arachnids. Protection could come from eating a scorpion, drinking liquid poured over an image like a healing stela, or just recording a spell on a stone, as seen here.

Title: Statue of a seated Anubis

Period: New Kingdom

Date: ca. 1390–1352 BCE

Medium: Stone - Granodiorite

Dimensions: 160 × 48.5 × 85.5 cm, 600 kg (63 × 19 1/8 × 33 11/16 in., 1322.8 lb.)

Credit Line: Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, Copenhagen (ÆIN 0033)

Object No.: DE.038

A life-size Anubis sits with both hands resting on his lap; the right one holds an ankh. As is typical of canid deities, Anubis has human eyes with cosmetic lines and eyebrows. His throne is decorated with the sema-tawy motif of knotted lily and papyrus plants, symbolizing the unification of Upper and Lower Egypt. The two inscriptions flanking the god’s legs give different titles of Amenhotep III and say that he was "beloved by Anubis in Ipet-resit"—that is, Luxor Temple—strongly suggesting this king had the statue erected there.
