any bets on the age of this coffin nail which came out of the 1960s excavation of the anglo saxon cathedral at winchester ? at the time I was given it by an excavator out of the trench as being saxon , but is it probably more likely to be later ? the excavation was on the north side of the present cathedral.

back in the 1960s one of the biddles' excavators of the saxon cathedrals beside the later norman one gave me this nail up out of the trench, telling me that it was a pre-conquest coffin nail; he may well have been being nice to an impressionable young lad
