View through the Lotus Mahal in the ruins of Vijaynagar at Hampi, near Hospet in Karnataka State, India. Though the rulers of Vijaynagar were Hindu, they were sufficiently open-minded to appreciate the architecture of their Moslem neighbours, and encouraged the use of this style in a number of their royal buildings.
