A series of arson attacks on the TGV / SNCF routes took place on 26th July 2024, causing significant disruption for several days just before the Olympic Games started in Paris. Investigators have said the attacks appeared to be co-ordinated sabotage, "terrorism" has not been officially mentioned and as far as I know [28thJuly] no-one has claimed "responsibility" - although several suspects come to mind !

The letter "W" and the waggon fleet number "971".

For information; the metal plate is the "Batter Plate" (or "batter board") - each hopper has three per side. Their purpose is to protect the planking when sledgehammers were used to free up locked or frozen loads of coal and persuade the contents to fall out of the trapdoors.

The considerable amount of fire damage can be estimated from the burnt edges visible.

The stack of wood is the shorter sections of green oak required for the underframe. (two headstocks, two cross pieces and one centre spine).

The pin-down facility for the brake lever is attached via some of the same bolts that hold the W-irons in place. The lever and bracket will be re-usable, after cleaning and repainting (note, the hand loop should be white). Fire damage to the interior is visible.

Detail of the tare mark (the unloaded waggon was assumed to weigh 5 tons 14 hundredweights). As with the fleet number, this tare mark appears on both sides so it doesn't matter which way the waggon has been turned when it passes over the weighbridge.

Two retaining loops (large U bolt) and two large coach bolts locate the bottom ends of the four side plank bolsters. Each side plank has two bolts holding them to the bolster, with a long metal strip on the outside and square washers to spread the load)

The "narrow" bolster end, showing damage to the upper planks from the arson attack. The horizontal grab rail is somewhat bent. Note the grab rails on the corner plates, one vertical the other at an angle.

Unfortunately, it has been the victim of an arson attack, and partially cremated. It was recently moved up to the main part of the Springwell site.
