On Friday the 23rd of September the weather was beautiful and my wife and I decided to take the rest of the afternoon off and do a little hiking. We drove up the Mount Baker Highway to the town of Glacier and just beyond took Dead Horse Road (don't ask me why it's named that) for 12 miles to the trailhead for Skyline Divide.

The trail is a very popular one but we saw few other people even though we were on the trail for about three hours. The hike to the ridge is about 2 miles and we spent a lot of time taking photos on the way up. The wild flowers were incredible because of the very late spring (the snow was just off this trail) and we took 2 1/2 hours going up.

The top of the ridge provided spectacular views of Mount Baker in the setting sun. We wanted to stay for the sunset, but did not want to come down in the dark and the mosquitoes were ferocious at the top, so we headed down and were back at the car in half an hour, by which time the sun was down and darkness was descending.
In the records I took at the time I have this as S. Sarcross, but I can find no record of a hybrid with this name, and believe it is actually S. Southern Cross. By any name, however, it is beautiful. The flowers, if I remember correctly, are about the size of dime and the plants are quite small.

One thing worth noting is the difficulty of getting good photos at an orchid show. Not only are the plants massed for effect, but there are often tags and ribbons from judging and backgrounds that are unsuitable for photos, and since the plants have to be photographed in place it is difficult and sometimes impossible to get decent photos.
This photo was taken on our last hike of 2011, an afternoon hike in Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest on the Skyline Divide trail. We arrived at the top a little while before sunset for some of the best views of Mount Baker anywhere in the North Cascades. The only thing that spoiled the view was a mosquito population that was worse than anything I've experienced in the Cascades.

Last Saturday's hike on the Baker River Trail in Mount Baker-Snoqualmie and North Cascades National Park produced few good views of the mountains, since the weather clouded over as we hiked. This was one of the only views we had of Mount Shuksan and even this was through the trees and was taken with a telephoto lens. Tomorrow we are snowshoeing up to Artist's Point and are hoping for some good views of Shuksan and Baker from there. We've never tried snowshoes before, so we are hoping it goes well. The round trip from the Mount Baker Ski Lodge to Artist's Point is 5.5 miles and we can follow the road up a good part of the way. The Artist's Point road is only open in the summer months, if at all (last summer it never opened because of the amount of snow we had the previous winter), but it is provides some fabulous views of Mount Shuksan to the east and Mount Baker to the west.
A new road or a secret gate,

My brother will be working in the Portland area this week and came up here Friday and spent the weekend with us. Saturday the weather was decent and he and I did a little hiking. Not many of the mountain trails are open yet and so we hiked the Baker River Trail, a trail that follows the Baker River and does not get above 1000 feet elevation. The trail begins in Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest and enters the southwest corner of North Cascades National Park, ending at Sulphide Creek and the hikers' camp there. The main attractions of the trail are old growth forest, the Baker River and stunning views of the mountains and glaciers when the day is clear, which it was not on Saturday.

We did find the wildflowers starting to bloom, especially the Bleeding Hearts, the Wood Violets and the Trilliums and I'll be posting pictures of some of them. This was taken fairly early in the morning near the beginning of our hike and is a picture of a drop of water hanging on a plant of False Solomon's Seal that was just beginning to unfold its new growth. It was taken with a macro lens and a star filter and is untouched. I'll be posting more pictures, but for now if you wish to see pictures of the hike you'll have to visit my brother's photostream at: www.flickr.com/photos/timhanko/, or my blog at: ronaldhanko-orchidhunter.blogspot.com/2012/04/baker-river...

We had been told that if you can walk you can snowshoe, and we found that to be true, and had a wonderful day, though the weather could have been better.

Artist's Point is at the end of the Mount Baker Highway and at over 5000 feet elevation provides wonderful views of the surrounding peaks, Mount Shuksan, Mount Baker, Coleman Pinnacle and Ptarmigan Ridge. The three mile road from the ski lodge below is closed during the winter, however, and Artist's Point is accessible only by skis or snowshoes or some very hard work afoot.

Mount Baker receives some of the greatest snowfall in the world and holds the world record for snowfall in a season, set in 1999 of 1140 inches (95 feet) / 2896 cm. This year there was well over 800 inches and last summer the road to Artist's Point was never opened because of heavy snow the previous winter. There was still over 20 feet of snow when we were there.

The total trip was about five and half miles with a little over 1000 feet gain in elevation. The only disappointment of the day was the weather which was mostly cloudy, allowing only occasional glimpses of the surrounding peaks. The only clear views we had were of Mount Shuksan from the lower ski lodge where we stopped on our way out, but even then the clouds were still rolling in.

This photo was taken at the top somewhere near Artist's point, though we could not tell exactly where the parking lot and bathrooms were, since they were completely buried. The view is of Mount Shuksan on the right, just visible through the clouds and Shuksan Arm on the left. We stayed at the top for about an hour hoping the weather would clear and taking time for a drink and a snack before heading down.
