Possibly of limited interest but here it is anyway. These are the sporing bodies (or perithecia) of the beech blister fungus. The fungus infects beech trees through wounds caused by a tiny insect, the beech scale insect (Cryptococcus fagisuga). The fungus causes blisters to form in the bark. I have read estimates that between 50 and 85% of the trees will die from the disease. The insect is an invasive species that probably arrived in Canada through Nova Scotia in the early 20th century. (If you look closely, there are some small black animals crawling among the fungus. These are some kind of springtail).

Pieces of bark from the gum tree have fallen in the recently finished storm. Seen here where they fell this afternoon. Beyond is the paling fence which a former neighbour and I built 11 yeras ago. December 2023.

Stepped back a little way to show the trunk of this Ginkgo tree.

Noted that the bark on the lower part of this tree trunk has been abraded - by debris in floodwater from the adjacent river, and my previous image shows the impacted gravel ...

Tree [Ginkgo Biloba] on the bank of the River Severn.

The gravel visible in the grooved / cracked bark was pounded there by floodwater.

During a recent walk in Stansted Forest, West Sussex, a few days ago this piece of birch tree bark caught my eye on as it stood out against the fallen leaves.

I also found a "slice" of birch tree nearby (which you can see in the PiP).

Whilst walking through the wooded area alongside Southwick Park Lake, a short drive from my house, I spotted this paint on one of the trees. It's obviously been there for some time and I have no idea why, but I thought it might make a nice abstract image. Hope you agree!
