Young White-bellied Sea Eagle

I was fortunate to have the long lens on the camera when this young White-bellied Sea Eagle came by (see also PiPs). The brown colour shows it's a young one (under 5-6 years) - the colour changes as they reach maturity. These can grow to a wingspan of about 2.2 M and are found around Australia and in southeast Asia.

The Australian Magpie is totally unrelated to the European Magpie. They are usually friendly (though a few occasionally become aggressive in the nesting season). This one was hoping for a few food scraps in an outdoor coffee area.

This mural was new to me. I note (PiP1) it was painted in 2025 by one of Australia's top mural painters, Jimmy Dvate, which explains the standard. It features (PiP2) the Eastern Ground Parrot (listed as vulnerable) and the flowers of Illawarra Zieria (listed as endangered). It's getting late here, but still Happy Wednesday Wall time.
There's a good fence here too, so I'll recycle this for Happy Fence Friday. :-)

From Wikipedia "The sooty oystercatcher (Haematopus fuliginosus) is a species of oystercatcher. It is a wading bird endemic to Australia and commonly found on its coastline. It prefers rocky coastlines, but will occasionally live in estuaries. All of its feathers are black. It has a red eye, eye ring and bill, and pink legs." These birds are listed as "endangered" in NSW and the one at left had only one leg.

It's remarkable how quickly this Little Wattlebird chick is growing. This was taken today (27 September), my previous image of it (PiP, also with last week's fence photo) was taken just ten days ago on 17/9.

As the bird is looking over the fence, I'm doing something similar and currently moving house. I'm afraid I shall be completely offline for a while after this flying visit. Wishing everyone a Happy Fence Friday and a great weekend to follow.

Little Wattlebird, little fence

This Australian bird is a member of the Honeyeater family and is known as a Little Wattlebird. They eat nectar from flowers, but also insects and seeds. I was surprised when it made a nest in a wall-mounted hanging pot plant basket. Which also meant that the wires around the basket became a fence around the nest - almost certainly the smallest this week. Check the next two images in the PiPs, taken over several days later. Happy Fence Friday, everyone.

I'm afraid outside doings (moving house) are taking my time at present, and it's likely to be near a fortnight before I'm able to join ipernity online again. Best wishes until then.

I was surprised to look from the window and see this female Satin Bowerbird looking back up at me. I dashed off and grabbed the pocket camera to get this image (and some window reflections) while the bird itself left a calling card. :-)

Brolgas are large cranes (wings to almost 2M) , native to the north and eastern inland parts of Australia. When I saw these just after we left the Dinosaur Museum they initially took off (PiP), but fortunately they landed again some distance away and I was able to get this image. They are distinguished by their red heads.

Red-tailed Black Cockatoos

It was a pleasant surprise to come across a flock of these cockatoos near the road. Thankfully they stayed when we stopped and didn't go far when they took off as I took this image. See PiPs for later images. They have helmet-like crests, males have the red tail panels, the females have small yellow spots and black barred yelllow-orange on the tail feathers.

Black Kites were common while far inland, usually circling in groups over some food source. More images in the PiPs. Despite the name, these seem to be mainly a russet colour. They have a wingspan of about 52cm.

Pink Cockatoo (visit my previous image at PiP2 for more details) landing on a fence with a paddymelon snack. I was very pleased to capture these images, as these birds are uncommon and have recently been listed as "vulnerable". Best viewed large.
