De voormalige veerboot Friesland is als varend monument opgenomen in het Register Varend Erfgoed Nederland van de Federatie Varend Erfgoed Nederland (FVEN) met registratienummer 2500. Het schip is aangesloten bij behoudsorganisatie Landelijke Vereniging tot Behoud van het Historisch Bedrijfsvaartuig (LVBHB).

Het schip heeft van 1956 tot 1986 de veerdienst tussen Harlingen en Terschelling onderhouden. Toen eind jaren 80 de nieuwe Friesland in de vaart zou komen, werd het schip in 1988 verkocht aan rederij Carolina te Zwijndrecht. Het schip werd verbouwd van veerboot naar salonboot.

In 1996 werd het schip opnieuw verkocht, rederij Gebhard zette daarna het schip in voor rondvaarten over de Oosterschelde en het had een vaste ligplaats in Zierikzee. Vanaf 2002 wordt het schip in de zomer ingezet op de route Enkhuizen – Medemblik in aansluiting op de Museumstoomtram Hoorn - Medemblik.

Tijdens de coronacrisis in 2020 werd het schip samen met de MS Holland door Rederij Doeksen gecharterd om de door afstandsregels verminderde capaciteit van hun huidige vloot op te vangen. Vanaf 29 mei 2020 voeren ze weer tussen Harlingen en Terschelling. Vanaf augustus 2020 voer de Friesland weer tussen Enkhuizen en Medemblik.

Nederland - Spakenburg, Oude Haven

The Oude Haven (Old Harbour) is Spakenburg’s soul. The harbour dates back to the 15th century. Ot was built for the botters, wooden boats used by fishermen when fishing was a way to earn a living.

After the construction of the Afsluitdijk, the saltwater Zuiderzee was dammed off and became a freshwater lake. This put an end to the fishing industry. The harbour no longer served the same function and became a marina.

Around 1975 more and more people started buying up the old botters and refurbishing them for recreational purposes. Nowadays about twenty of these old vessels can be admired in the Oude Haven.

The Pieter Boele was built in 1893. It spent most of its days on the Rhine, now a museum ship. Powered by a triple expansion steam engine dating from 1924.

That floral shape is the same one as in this year's "Space Spider", but heavily filtered and recolored. After its transformation, it made me think of candy corn. Hence the title and the kids' Western motif. Hope you enjoy seeing it as much as I enjoyed making it.

Song reference, give or take a spelling change. :D

The accidental candy corn via filtration has happened before. Here, for instance. But that always was a favorite Halloween treat for me. So I'm good. ;)
