The expert eyes were searching for Warblers that have started to arrive here. These tiny birds that are fast moving and always seem to be hiding, are not easy to see, and definitely not easy to photograph, as all bird photographers know. As usual, my eyes also wander to wildflowers and fungi. The Wandering Garter Snake that slithered across the narrow trail and disappeared into the long grass came as a surprise. Definitely not my favourite thing! Managed a quick shot in between people and have posted it just for the record. The Osprey, and the little Clay-coloured Sparrow with a beak full of insects, were enjoyed by all. Actually, the air was full of tiny flying insects, as you can tell by all the tiny specks.<br /> <br /> We were very lucky with the weather, which is always so much appreciated. As usual, I have missed most of the walks from the session that has just finished.<br /> <br /> Burnsmead is quite a good place for birds and I don't have to drive across the city to get there. I do find the walk, for me, is a bit too far, and a few of us chose to leave before the end. We lucked out with the weather, fortunately. Glad we weren't out two evenings later, when we had a huge storm that resulted in a lot of flooding in the city and around Southern Alberta. Some people had a lot of hail, too.<br /> <br /> One of the highlights for me was seeing an Osprey land on a distant, tall utility pole, with a fish in its talons. We also enjoyed watching a pair of tiny Yellow Warblers collecting delicate insects to feed their babies. These brightly coloured birds are so small and so fast and, needless to say, not easy to photograph! We were surprised to see a Northern Rough-winged Swallow perched on a fence near the path. I've only ever "seen" a handful and always in rapid flight overhead. This one just sat there and gave us the chance to take photos. Here in southern Alberta, we are under a Rainfall Warning and, sure enough, it is pouring with rain today. Now there is concern about flooding. Our temperature at noon is 9C (windchill 5C). From the Weather Network:<br /> <br /> "A long episode of rain, at times heavy, continues. A low pressure system will continue to bring rain. Total rainfall amounts of 50 to 80 mm are expected with local accumulations possibly exceeding 100 in the Bow Valley region. <br /> <br /> Rain in Calgary will vary significantly with this event. One was a birding walk and the other a botany outing. I usually miss most of these, but made an extra effort to get out with friends for a few hours. I will also have some photos from today, 13 June 2019, after being invited to spend some time at a friend's acreage this morning, followed by a short drive along a few of my usual roads. They should be somewhat 'better' images : )<br /> <br /> The 9 photos added tonight were taken in Calgary on 9 June 2019, when I went with friends on a birding walk down in Weaselhead. It turned out to be a much longer walk than expected, around 5 km, but felt further than that. This walk always starts with a long hill to walk down and the same hill to face at the end of the walk.<br /> <br /> It was rather quiet bird-wise, but we were happy to see a Calliope Hummingbird. I have posted a couple of shots, just for my own record.<br /> <br /> I almost didn't go on this walk, as the weather forecast said there might be rain. Fortunately, we were lucky. Our weather has been its usual crazy self - snow was even mentioned in the forecast for this week, but it has changed to rain and maybe some thunderstorms. The ground is so dry, so we need all the moisture we can get.
