This plant caught my eye on a canal-side walk. Growing out of a crack in the brickwork of a bridge, the tendril had grown, putting out regularly spaced leaves, until it touched the water.

One from the archives! We had hitch-hiked (those were the days!) along the Rhine valley from Mainz and had been just dropped off by the Rodenkirchen Bridge. This shot was taken from under that bridge looking north to the Südbrücke railway bridge and Cologne Cathedral in the distance.

This is Voringossen (Voring Waterfall), the best-known waterfall in Norway, though only 83rd in height among Norway's many waterfalls. We stayed in a guest house that was just above the falls and walked to the falls that morning, though it was rainy and wet, spending most of the morning visiting the various viewpoints. Voringfossen drops 182 meters from the Hardangervidda Plateau into the Mabodalen Valley, a valley into which we would hike later in the day to see the falls from a different perspective. There is a hotel above the falls and a bridge from which the falls can be viewed, visible in the upiper left of the photo.

Our impressions of Norway were that it was (1) very beautiful especially the fjords and mountains, (2) very expensive, (3) full of waterfalls, and (4) full of tourists. We were at Voringossen early but by the time we left the parking lot on the other side of the falls was filled with vehicles and we found on our hikes that the best-known trails were also jammed with tourists. The weather was generally decent, though we had a lot of cloudy weather and little sunshine, but the day we visited Voringfossen was the only day we had a lot of rain and came back to our guest house wet.

This was the guest house we stayed in the first two nights in Norway. Conveniently it was just around the corner from Voringfossen (Voring Waterfall), the first of the places we wanted to visit in Norway. As with almost all the houses int he area, it had a sod roof.

Each time we visit Ljubljana, we visit the dragons on the bridge. I think we have posted blog photos from most of those stops. We greet them, like old friends, reach up and pat a claw or hold their tails. Its our tradition in this small and compact capital. They have never let us down.

De Wilhelminabrug is een brug over de Dommel in de binnenstad van 's-Hertogenbosch. Het verbindt de Uilenburg met Het Zand.

De eerste Wilhelminabrug werd gebouwd nadat in 1874 een aantal werken van de vestingwerken afgebroken mocht worden. De stad was hiermee in 1890 mee klaar. De brug werd gebouwd, opdat er een weg naar het Station 's-Hertogenbosch vanuit de binnenstad was. De huidige Visstraat werd een doorgaande weg, die tot deze tijd nog een plein was. Ook werd er een Rondeel voor deze brug opgeofferd. De brug kreeg toen de naam Stationsbrug. De eerste brug werd in 1875 gebouwd.

In 1923 werd de brug vervangen door een tweede brug. In 1944 was de Wilhelminabrug de plaats waar hevig gevochten werd. Bosschenaar Piet Kerssens loodste de Welsh Division door de stad naar het station, waar de Duitse bezetters een hardnekkige verdediging hadden. Toen Piet een gewonde uit de vuurlinie wilde slepen, raakte hij zelf ook zwaargewond en hij stierf een dag later. Zijn naam wordt op een gedenksteen in ere gehouden. De brug werd zwaar beschadigd en moest ook weer vervangen worden. Maar enkele van Hildo Krops beeldhouwwerken zijn bewaard gebleven en her en der over de stad verspreid nog steeds te bewonderen, zoals bijvoorbeeld het ruiterstandbeeld van keizer Maximiliaan bij de Hekellaan.

De derde brug die de naam Wilhelminabrug kreeg, kwam in 1954 gereed.

Op de derde brug zijn kunstwerken aangebracht van Frans van der Burgt. Deze kunstwerken zijn vervaardigd op de twee pilaren op de brug.

Unmittelbar vor dem Wasserschloß in Chemnitz-Klaffenbach fließt die Würschnitz entlang, einer der Quellflüsse der Chemnitz. Das Bild ist zwar schon ein paar Tage alt, aber besser ist die Situation nicht geworden. Der Pegel ist längst ganz unten, auch wenn es bei uns die Tage etwas Regen gegeben hat. - Das Flüßchen kann allerdings auch anders! Es ist zwar noch nicht oft vorgekommen, aber über die Ufer getreten ist die Würschnitz hier schon mal. Man muß sich im PIP 1 nur mal vorstellen, daß das Wasser da Unterkante Oberkante stand und unter der Brücke (PIP2) fast kein Platz mehr war.

Here is where the land begins to even out a little after the fledgling river drops from its high altitude beginning up near the China border on the Karakoram Highway. It flows down through the north here and combines with the Indus River as it curves in from Baltistan. These waters form the life blood of millions of people, providing drinking water, hydro power, and irrigation on their long journey to the Arabian Sea.

The Folkestone Harbour Station, which was at the end of this bridge, closed in 2009, when cross channel ferry services from this port were in decline.

The way in :- cross a bridge over the deep ditch [a dry moat] to the bailey gatehouse.

The Gatehouse is largely Norman in date [c1140], but the actual bridge & abutments are later, most likely dating to the 14th century - and there are many later additions & repairs.

The very low post & chain fence is to keep you out of the "moat" - the grass slope is not only very steep, but the dry grass is rather slippery.
