Have a delightfully Happy Fence Friday. These lights illuminate the footbridge next to Southern Cross Station which leads to Docklands in Melbourne. I love the bright red colour and curved, neck-like shape. Function needn't be boring.

The causeway between the mainland and Garden Island Naval Base off the WA coast. Access to the island, once called Meeandip and open to visit in daylight hours, is now restricted to the military only.

This was early yesterday morning, just after sunrise. The bridge is over one of the residential canals in Mandurah, WA, leading to the marina and Dolphin Quay.

This is the new Old Bridge over the estuary between Mandurah and Hall's Head. It has a delightful gentle curve that is a joy to walk across. This bridge replaced the old Old Bridge some five years ago because the timber piles of that structure were no longer safe for the increasing amount of traffic. It was a sad but necessary change.

This is the Matagarup Bridge which carries pedestrians from East Perth to Perth Stadium. We walk across it when we join thousands of others to see the mighty (cough, splutter) Fremantle Football Club, the "Freo Dockers", play Australian Rules Football, the most exciting ball game in the world (of course, YMMV, but I know I'm right).

We may even get some rain here in Mandurah (though I'll believe it when I see it) - an event which will be celebrated with abandon by all, although dancing naked in the streets whilst splashing in the puddles may be frowned upon by the wowsers.

A. Happy Fence Friday to each and every one of you. This is the start of the long causeway into the Leschenault Estuary in Australind WA.

Once upon a time (the mid-19th century) there was a proposal to build a port here for ships trading between Australia and India. Hence the name "Australind". Needless to say, it didn't happen. For the birds and fish which inhabit the estuary and inlet, this was a huge relief ... and for us, too. It is a lovely spot.
