Mount Assiniboine and Lake Magog

This is the view of Mount Assiniboine and Lake Magog from the lodge. The lodge is a popular place for fishermen, campers, climbers and others and can be reached either by hiking or by helicopter. There are flights in and out several times a week. We visited the lodge after hiking to a nearby ridge, the Niblet and enjoyed some cold drinks and snacks there. It is about a half mile hike from the campground to the lodge.

My apologies for such a late post. Had a very busy day working on projects in the house and outdoors and did not get to Ipernity until late this afternoon. Baked bread and made salsa this morning, mowed the lawn, fixed a trailer tire and worked in the vegetable garden this afternoon.

There is a lodge at Mount Assiniboine near Lake Magog and daily helicopter flights in season for fishermen, campers, climbers and others. We backpacked to the lake and visited the lodge on the Thursday we were there, when they have snacks and drinks for sale for backpackers. We each had a cold drink and a snack there after hiking to the Niblet earlier in the day.

Little Belt Mountain Anemone

This is the Little Belt Mountain Anemone, Anemone lithophilia, growing on the Niblet, a ridge we climbed on our recent backpacking trip. Having backpacked to Lake Magog, we spent two days and nights there and went day-hiking one of the days to the Niblet with its views of Mount Assiniboine, Sunburst Peak, Sunburst Lake and Cerulean Lake. We had not seen a lot of wildflowers on our hike, but there were quite a few at the Niblet.

Photographed while hiking from camp at Lake Magog to the Niblet in Mount Assiniboine Provincial Park, British Columbia, this is a common wildflower in B.C. and Alberta, Aquilegia flavescens, the Yellow Columbine.

Sunburst Peak and Lake

One of the two plus days we camped at Lake Magog in Mount Assiniboine Provincial Park in British Columbia, we day-hiked to the Niblet, a viewpoint on a ridge above this peak and lake, both named Sunburst. The photo was taken not far from our campground as we passed both Sunburst and Cerulean Lakes. Mount Assiniboine, though the dominant peak in the area, does not show much from this perspective and is the peak to the left of Sunburst. The previous three days had been spent backpacking in to Lake Magog and it felt good to hike without backpacks.

These were our tents at Lake Magog in Mount Assiniboine Provincial Park in British Columbia when we backpacked there earlier this summer. The tent in the foreground is mine and the other belongs to my son-in-law. The B.C. parks often have the platforms even in the backcountry, perhaps to protect the area. There was still some snow on the ground as is also evident in the photo. We stayed here for two nights before packing out.

This photo shows Lake Magog, Mount Magog and Mount Assiniboine from the short trail to Lake Magog from the campground which was our final destination on our family backpacking trip. Myself, my son-in-law and his two oldest boys hiked to Mount Assiniboine from Sunshine Meadows ski resort near Canmore. Mount Assiniboine Provincial Park is in British Columbia on the border with Alberta, a border which we crossed several times while hiking. The peaks shown lie on that border.

This photo shows the four of us who backpacked to Mount Assiniboine in July, myself, son-in-law, Scott, and his two oldest boys, Owen and Cole. The picture was taken after we reached the campground, set up camp and hiked down to Lake Magog. Mount Assiniboine is the peak on right middle of the photo.

This photo was taken on a recent backpacking trip in the Canadian Rockies, in Mount Assiniboine Provincial Park in British Columbia. We were coming to the end of our second day, and our destination, Lake Og, was visible as we hiking out of the Valley of Rocks, crossed the last ridge and descended to the lake. The trail is visible in the lower right and we would camp on that side of the lake for a night before continuing to Mount Assiniboine and Magog Lake, our final destination.

After two tough days of backpacking in Mount Assiniboine Provincial Park we camped at Og Lake with Mount Assiniboine, the Matterhorn of the Rockies, looming over the other peaks. The person is my grandson, Cole, and when the photo was taken we were crossing the last ridge before Og Lake and our campground.

Backpacking to Mount Assiniboine we camped our second night at Og Lake. We arrived and set up camp in the afternoon and later watched the sunset. It was a beautiful spot but the mosquitoes were very bad. In the photo, several other campers' tents are visible on the lower right and Mount Assiniboine looms above the other peaks on the right..

Mount Assiniboine is known as the "Matterhorn of the Rockies." It is in British Columbia west of the city of Banff and Banff National Park. This photo was taken at sunset from the shores of Lake Og where we camped a night on our backpacking excursion to Assiniboine.

Eastern Fairy Slipper

This is one of three orchids we saw along the trails as we backbacked in Mount Assiniboine Provincial Park. It is the Eastern Fairy Slipper, Calypso bulbosa var. americana, found from the Rockies to the east coast.

Frog Orchid

While backpacking in Mount Assiniboine Provincial Park we saw three different orchids. This is the Frog Orchid, Coeloglossum viride. When we saw it, there was not enough light for photos, so I've used and older photo from another nearby trail.

When backpacking in Mount Assiniboine Provincial Park a few weeks ago, we camped at Lake Magog and while camped there day-hiked to the Niblet, a viewpoint on a low peak or ridge in the area. This was the view from the Niblet. Mount Magog is on the left with Mount Assiniboine to its right and Sunburst Peak dominating the scene. The lakes are from left to right, Magog, Sunburst and Cerulean. For those who do not comprehend why anyone would carry forty pounds (20 kg) on their back for thirty miles (50 km), this is the reason.

On another note, we are in Europe, in Belfast, visiting our daughter and friends and attending a conference. We will be here the next three weeks and my posts, such as I am able to put up, will be earlier than usual. We arrived here in Belfast yesterday after a long and rather frustrating trip. We had to be rerouted and arrived eight or nine hours later than scheduled. It is good to be landed, however, and to have had a decent night's sleep, something impossible in an airplane seat.

Howard Douglas Lake and Citadel Peak

These two photos were taken close together from a ridge along the Citadel Peak Trail. The inset looks back and this looks ahead to Howard Douglas Lake and Citadel Peak, the massive peak in the background on the left side of the photo. Our trail would take us down to the lake (where we replenished our water supply), around the left side of the lake, up over the ridge beyond the lake and then across the valley to Citadel Peak which we would skirt to the left before descending steeply into the valley beyond. At this point we were still in Alberta, but would cross into British Columbia at Citadel. The first camp on the trail is at Howard Douglas Lake but we would still have about 12 km to go and so we hiked on. Mount Assiniboine, our final destination, is visible on the right.

Citadel Pass Trail

Taken on the first and most difficult day of our backpacking excursion, the photo shows some of the scenery along the Citadel Pass Trail (visible on the right) and looks back over the trail. That day was the most difficult with 19 km of trail and some abrupt elevation changes to navigate. Also we were adjusting to our packs and the two boys had never backpacked before.
