This was our last campsite in Yosemite where we camped for one night sleeping in the car as we often do when traveling. We left the next morning for home. For those who are unacquainted with such campgrounds the box in front of the car is a bear box, a place to keep food and other items safe from bears who will break into cars or recreational vehicles for food and other scented items.

Doon, Iowa

This was the sleepy little farm town in northwest Iowa where I grew up as a boy. We were back there recently and were able to get some photos of my old haunts. When we lived there in the 1960's Doon had a population of about 300 people. It now has just over 600 but hasn't changed much. This is Main Street which had more businesses when I was a boy but even then not many. The other photos are of the house we lived in and of the school I attended. The car is a 1958 or 1959 Ford Fairlane from about the same era.

Big Oak Flat Trailhead

After being unable to hike several rails due to snow and ice we ended up hiking the Big Oak Flat trail in Yosemite National Park. This was the trailhead with our vehicle parked in front, the vehicle in which we lived for most of the trip.

In visiting the some of the desert parks of the southwest we found numerous abandoned vehicles in the back country, especially in old mining areas. This post features three such vehicles found in the area of Wall Street Mill, and old gold mining mill. People have asked with previous posts why such junk is not removed. I suppose the answer is (1) that there is far too much of this stuff; (2) that it would be nearly impossible to haul it out of some of the remote places in which it is found; and (3) that it is now part of the history of these parks. It is now, in fact, illegal to destroy or remove such "artifacts" which are protected by the Antiquities Act of 1906 or other federal laws.

This old car is near the townsite of Harrisburg in the Panamint Mountains west of Death Valley. How it got there and what kind of car it is I do not know.

Police Car Moth

The name of this moth is a reference to its black and white coloring. This example was photographed in eastern Washington along the Kettle Crest trail in Colville National Forest. These moths were everywhere and these were the plants they seemed to favor, which I believe to be the Varied-leaf Phacelia.

This abandoned car lies near Aguereberry Camp and Eureka Mine on the west side of Death Valley National Park. I do not know what kind of car it is, but it has certainly seen better days.

Taken at an observation point in the Mount St. Helens area called "Miner's Car." The sign nearby reads, "This car was tossed about like a toy, rolled from across the road where it had been parked. Owners of the car were in their cabin at a nearby mine and were killed when Mount St. Helens erupted." This is five or six miles from the crater.

California Dreamin'

During the holidays, my son-in-law who was visiting, my youngest son and I went out to do some photography. Since our time was limited we went to a place in the foothills of the North Cascades about a half hour away where we had seen and photographed a yard full of old vehicles and machinery. The place is not a junkyard, but appears to be private land on which a quite a number of these old vehicles are displayed without any attempt being made to protect them from the elements.

The vehicles include old cars and trucks as well as old tractors, old logging and construction equipment, including an old steam shovel, old bulldozers and caterpillars, and old farm equipment. We would have asked permission but there seemed to be no one about and no one said anything about our being there and taking pictures, so we snapped away, though the day was a bit wet and gray. These are some of the pictures we took that afternoon.
