Another building that was abused and misused during the Soviet era, with the books and icons purportedly burnt inside. The cathedral spent a good number of years operating as a museum.

Most people were heading to the main door of the church. Here, many priests bustled busily, lighting the candles that were proferred to them by the faithful. I went forward, mainly because I wanted a photo, and a priest noticed me, and my lack of candle. He took one of the "spares" on the table behind him, lit it, and gave it to me, accompanied by a beautiful smile and some words that I did not understand. I thanked him, and we carried it back to our room, where it continued to burn for most of the night. When I woke, during the early hours, and noticed the flickering flame, it was a wonderful prompt to remind me to be thankful for the true meaning of Easter.

Getting in and out of the cathedral did involve negotiating a path between the singers. Maybe this was reason enough for many to just enjoy from outside, as despite the large crowd gathered around the building, the inside felt no more or less busy than it did during the day.

For many hours, the crowds came and went. On the steps, the choir sang. Of course, in this day, it was a multi-media event, with large screens erected for the proceedings. It was a beautiful event to be a part of.

Chichester cathedral was consecrated in 1108 and following a disastrous fire was rebuilt and reconsecrated in 1199. The spire was built in 1402 but collapsed in 1861 due to subsidence and was rebuilt. The cathedral spire is the third tallest in England and acts as a landmark for travellers.

A church of such size and significance would normally be attributed to a large population centre. Although it is not far from Sao Paulo, with over 22 million people, it is actually in a town called Aparecida.

The church can hold between 30,000 and 45,000, and overall the site is designed to handle up to 200,000. Little Aparecida's population is somewhere around 30,000.

There are many interesting stories associated with the site and its significance, and specifically the image of the virgin. Entitled as the "Patroness of Brazil", the highly revered image was found in a nearby river by some fishermen.

In the 1970's, an opportunistic thief made off with the image, but it was dropped when he was chased, smashing in to over 200 pieces. A significant glass shield now protects the restored image.

Muenster, the cultural centre of Westphalia, is a city with a population of more than 250.000 of which nearly 50.000 are students at the University of Muenster. This surely helped Muenster to gain the status of the "bicycle capital of Germany".

Charlemagne sent out St. Ludger in 792 to evangelise the area, so Ludger built a school here. When the Diocese of Muenster was founded in 805, Ludger the first bishop. He had the first church built at this place, named "Ludgerus-Dom", that existed upto 1377, when it got demolished and replaced by a gothic cloister.

Next to the "Ludgerus Dom" a new church was built, when Dodo was bishop in Muenster 967-993. This one got the name "Ottonischer Dom". Bishop Hermann of Katzenelnbogen added a westwork to this building in 1192, that got integrated into the third chathedral built here 1225 - 1264.

This cathedral still exists, though it was a ruin after WWII and the old westwork never got rebuilt. The cathedral is a mixture of late romanesque and early gothic style.

In a natural glacier cave at approx. 2,500 metres above sea level. It is best not to go into the rear right-hand section. There is a huge slab of ice hanging there. (On the left in the picture with a head torch: my wife).

In einer natürlichen Gletscherhöhle auf ca. 2.500 Metern Seehöhe. In den hinteren rechten Teil geht man besser nicht. Dort hängt eine riesige Eisplatte. (Links im Bild mit Stirnlampe: meine Frau).
