The cemetery is in the process of creating stable settings for all headstones so that they are aligned correctly and remain aligned for years to come. This involves removing and then resetting the headstones, and regrading all of the sites.

From the east side, looking back towards the flag hill. Note that spouses of interned veterans can be buried at the same site and their names are inscribed on the back of the headstone.

The cemetery entrance gates, which are difficult to photograph due to the proximity of I-280 (it is directly behind me.) I-280 also destroys any sense of grand entry into a memorial setting due to the heavy traffic noise and the awkward routing required to get to the entrance.

The cemetery’s initial construction was with New Deal funds and the gates are reflective of the New Deal architecture. The Living New Deal project at UC Berkeley has a photo of the gates when the cemetery was being constructed, which illustrate the growth that has occurred over the years:

The north boundary of the cemetery is the city of South San Francisco, location of the famous “SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO THE INDUSTRIAL CITY” sign. The sign is readily visible from US 101 when traveling from the airport (SFO) into San Francisco. The sign was created in 1929 to boost the image of the city of SSF as the industrial area for San Francisco and reflected what was once true. Up through WWII, SSF was the home of steel, meat packers, ship builders, and other major industries; it’s main economy now is high tech and bio tech, plus service industry for SFO. Many travelers seeing the sign assume that it is some sort of welcome to SF, but the borders of SSF do not even touch the borders of SF.

Some things I had never known turned up in the Wikipedia article. The letters are actually concrete and, so that they will look uniform on an uneven hillside, they vary in size from 48 to 65 feet in height. The sign is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

Under certain weather conditions, the cemetery is in the flight path for SFO which stretches across the middle of the picture. Due to the elevation differences, flights over the cemetery are often relatively low (I know because I once lived close to the cemetery.)

In the distance (and in the fog) in this picture is the San Mateo bridge across the bay.

The west side of the cemetery is adjacent to I-280, the freeway that runs across the lower middle portion of the picture. Traffic on I-280 requires such a focus that most drivers would not notice the cemetery and, though this picture suggests otherwise, the majority of the cemetery is actually below I-280 and not easily visible. It is thus not a readily visible reminder (if anyone cared) of the costs of war policies.

The housing on the hillside is in the cities of San Bruno (left side of picture) and South San Francisco (right side of picture). The famous San Bruno gas line explosion (http://www.sfgate.com/san-bruno-fire/ ) that destroyed 38 homes was in a residential area just outside the upper left side of the picture.

Considering the state of politics around the globe and the increasing militaristic nativism in politics, it seemed that this trip was a good time for visiting a place I’d only been to once in my 40+ years of living and exploring in the SF Bay Area – one of its largest, but little known, veterans’ cemeteries.

Golden Gate National Cemetery is relatively unknown among Bay Area residents, probably because it is somewhat difficult to access and has become increasingly hemmed in by growth (see nearby pictures).

The cemetery, founded in 1941, is 161.5 acres and contains 137,435 internments. The cemetery is often confused with the much smaller military cemetery at the Presidio of San Francisco, but this larger cemetery is in San Bruno because the residents of San Francisco had voted (in 1937) to ban the construction of new cemeteries in the city. Abandoned (?) cemetery for Osceola, NV, an abandoned mining town. I always find it surprising how cemeteries that look completely abandoned will have plastic flowers that had to have been placed there in more recent history.

Tombstone in a barely maintained part of a larger cemetery in Banning. Though the section had very little indication of maintenance, there were small placards placed at each grave. This grave was for an infant that died in 1930.
