Cheboygan Crib Light

The last stop on the Shepler/GLLKA Lighthouse Cruise was Cheboygan Harbor. After a little tour showing the facilities and the docked ships, we returned to Mackinaw City and our cars.

I photographed this light a few weeks back (several times, actually), but not from this angle. When the Coast Guard decided to remove the light from its wooden crib outside the harbor, the city apparently protested; the locals had come to think of the light as the city's mascot. So the Guard moved the light to the pier, and the city is now responsible for maintaining it.

14 Foot Shoal Light

While this light is easily visible from Cheboygan Point on the Lake Huron beach at Cheboygan State Park, the Shepler/Great Lakes Lighthouse Keepers Association cruise took us quite close to the light.

This light was never permanently staffed; instead the light was controlled from the Poe Light facility.

14 Foot Shoal Light

Both the Poe and 14 Foot Shoal lights have permanently-active fog signals. This light's horn is audible all night from the Cheboygan State Park campground. I find it oddly comforting.

In Lake Huron, off the end of Bois Blanc Island. This light is distantly visible from Cheboygan State Park (and even more distantly from Cheboygan's waterfront). Poe Reef Light used to be staffed by a four-man crew, three of whom were in residence at any given time....

As you can see, the light's now the home to a cormorant colony. A side effect is that it has a quite foul smell.

The lighthouse lives on a wooden crib, which is normally fully underwater and thus protected from rot. Our guides expressed some concern about the effect of the current low lake levels; at this point, with the water "down 4 feet" (from normal? normal minimum? average? high? not sure), the top of the crib is exposed.

Such an impressive building, about which I can find almost nothing. It was apparently originally a Methodist church, but more recently an Assembly of God congregation called it home. A couple years ago they merged with another congregation and moved away. The building's clearly occupied, but signs on the door make it clear that visitors are not welcome.

The Yellow Trail's quite pretty.

There are lighthouses all over the place at the Straits. This long-abandoned structure is just off the long beach near Cheboygan Point.
