The shunter is coupling SY0366 to a rake of loaded coal tippers before taking them to the local power station on the Nanpiao Coal Railway. He can then retake his seat next to the ash pit.

Small drift coal mines in the Hegang area of northern China. There are two drifts in the centre of this view which is best viewed large. The dirt rucks in the background belong to the larger deep mines.

600mm gauge electric locomotive at the Dalu coal mine in Hegang, Heilongjiang province, China. This is one of a number that were supplied to the Hegang Mining Administration from the (Shaoshan) Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Works (now CRRC Zhuzhou Locomotive) in Hunan Province.

QJs 6905 and 6991 at the head of a freight service climbing from Linxhi toward Reshui and the Jinpeng section of the Jitong Railway. Steam had only a few months left on this section and would be withdrawn from the Chabuga - Daban section by the end of 2005.

Conveyor runs and associated coal processing buildings at Donghaikuang Colliery in the Jixi area of Heilongjiang, China. Judging by Google Maps all this has now been cleared away. Things change very fast in China.

A member of the team is watching the road from on top of the tender as JS 5741 heads back to Hailar having deposited wagons at a nearby industrial premises. The locomotive was one of two station pilots that day. The shunter appears to be sitting on the front buffer beam.

Winter on the narrow gauge

Winter lasts a long time in North-East China and this image was taken in mid-April. The previous day had seen bright warm sunshine! A C2 0-8-0 locomotive works hard up the last few metres to the summit of the Huanan Coal Railway taking the empties back to the coal loading point. All gone now of course.
