Bee at work

Günter, this one's for you - your amzing macro images inspired me to get out into the garden and explore the miniature world.

I think this is some sort of solitary bee rather than a honeybee, and it's one of the few shots where I managed decently sharp focus as it was busy feeding and pollinating.

An experiment with macro focus-stacking in the camera. This one turned out pretty well, but the slightest breeze is enough to make the stacked result blurry.

Our local woodland is a blue wash of native bluebells at this time of year. A lot of gardens have the Spanish bluebells in bloom (larger, more upright flowers) and the woodland edge has a mixture of both varieties, and their hybrids.

Güni's excellent macro photographs have inspired me to take some close up images again, and I'll get to it when the wind and rain ease up outside.

I took this one a very long time ago (over 20 years!) but I still rather like it. I got in close the the very centre of a water lily flower. The EXIF tells me I had an aperture of f8, which in hindsight probably wasn't narrow enough, as it could do with a little more depth of field.

20-odd macro frames stacked together to increase depth of field. I made a lot of attempts, but the slightest breeze messed with the stacking, so most came out blurred.

Taking during our safari in 2018.

This male was close, but not really that close. I had the full telephoto lens zoomed in, and the eye completely filled my view. This was one of the young males that was challenging us (in our open sided vehicle...)

I stopped using the big telephoto, and grabbed a point-and-shoot camera to make a video of the confrontation. The males eventually moved off, when they decided we were not a threat.
