Saturday Self-Challenge – theme 22.02.20: "dramatic picture"

The winter here in Bern was much too warm until now. In there were only 4 frost days (days below 0°C/32°F) in January. The statistical average of the last 30 years is about 20 days!
Now, in the middle of February it was partly so warm that I already saw bees at work!
The picture above I took this week when I was on my first bike ride this year. Dramatic weather. Right before a heavy shower. Dramatic weather creates dramatic pictures! ;-)

Man nennt sie "Balseros" (wörtlich übersetzt etwa "Bootsmänner") und sie riskieren ihre Leben für ihre Freiheit und den Traum, in die USA auszuwandern. Dazu bauen sie selber Boote, um das Meer zu überqueren. Das Allerwichtigste ist, in den USA die eignen Füsse an Land zu setzen. Denn lange Jahre galt welt-exklusiv für Kubaner die sogenannte "dry feet, wet feet" Politik. Aufgefischt auf dem Meer wurden sie in ihre Heimat zurückgeschickt, einmal an Land erhielten sie aber Asyl in den USA.

In 2019 erlebt Kuba eine neue Ausreisewelle. Viele lassen Diktatur und Wirtschaftskrise hinter sich und wollen in die USA. Weil der Weg im selbstgebauten Boot zu gefährlich ist, schlagen sie sich über Mexiko bis an die US-Grenze durch. Mindestens 11'000 Kubaner haben Mexiko von Oktober 2018 bis Mai 2019 durchquert, um an der US-Grenze Asyl zu beantragen. Im Vorjahreszeitraum waren es nur halb so viele. Dort hat sich unter dem Druck Washingtons der Umgang mit Migranten radikal geändert.
