&lt;br /&gt;
The cliffs from Little Haven to Broad Haven (and northward) display a spectacular range of geological structures, folding, faulting and thrusting, mainly in the Lower Coal Measures. The relatively weak mudstone and shale-dominated sequences show much incompetent deformation: tight, thrusted and overturned folds, in contrast to the thicker, stronger, sandstones which have formed relatively open and concentric folds.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The northern limb of the Fox Hole anticline forms the southern headland of The Settlands bay. The style of folding is open and concentric, largely due to the thick (approx 70 m in total) and competent (strong) nature of the sandstone of which it is comprised. At the western end of the headland the bedding dips at about 30° to the north, but this steepens along its length to become near-vertical at the eastern end of the headland. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
This is a view from The Settlands looking head-on at the steeply dipping bedding surfaces. The bedding is cut by nurmerous joints (fractures). Just left of centre is a fenced-off mine entrance a few metres above beach level. This is thought to be a former drainage level to dewater coal mine workings, possibly in the core of the anticline and perhaps further inland.&lt;/div&gt;</description>

Heading north along the coast path from Rickets Head, the site of Trefrane Cliff Colliery comes into view, with its spoil heaps and prominent furnace chimney. The colliery worked the Cliff Vein coal seam, pieces of which can be readily found in the spoil heaps.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Looking over St Brides Bay, Ramsey Island is visible on the skyline just right of centre.&lt;/div&gt;</description>

&lt;br /&gt;
This is a view westwards over the Landshipping Pill and Daugleddau River at low tide from Landshipping Quay, Pembrokeshire, Wales. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Close by here is a small but poignant memorial to the 40 miners killed in Pembrokeshire's worst ever coal mining disaster on 14th February 1844, when the rising tide broke through into a mine roadway heading out from the Garden Pit under the estuary with very little depth of cover to the sea bed. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;

Having worked underground in the coal mines of Yorkshire and South Wales, I find these stories especially moving. Even today, I feel there is an intense sadness about this place which still lingers, even on a bright sunny day. &lt;br /&gt;

A memorial service for the lost miners (which included children and probably some women too) is held annually on St Valentine's Day at St Burnett's Hill Chapel nearby.&lt;/div&gt;</description>

&lt;br /&gt;
This is a view westwards over the Landshipping Pill and Daugleddau River at low tide from Landshipping Quay, Pembrokeshire, Wales. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Close by here is a small but poignant memorial to the 40 miners killed in Pembrokeshire's worst ever coal mining disaster on 14th February 1844, when the rising tide broke through into a mine roadway heading out from the Garden Pit under the estuary with very little depth of cover to the sea bed. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
There are several contemporary accounts of the disaster which vary somewhat in the details, and are summarised here:&lt;br /&gt;

Having worked underground in the coal mines of Yorkshire and South Wales, I find these stories especially moving. Even today, I feel there is an intense sadness about this place which still lingers, even on a bright sunny day. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
A memorial service for the lost miners (which included children and probably some women too) is held annually on St Valentine's Day at St Burnett's Hill Chapel nearby.&lt;/div&gt;</media:text>

The poem tells of the feelings of a young lad as he descends the shaft of a coal mine for the very first time to start work on his first underground shift. I still remember my first time too, even after 42 years. &lt;br /&gt;

Translation, for those not familiar with South Yorkshire dialect:&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;i&gt;I was frightened and cold, just fourteen years old&lt;br /&gt;

This is a north-easterly view over the Don valley and part of Conisbrough, South Yorkshire, near Doncaster. The photo was taken from the disused quarries in the Lower Magnesian Limestone (Edlington Formation) at North Cliff, Conisbrough, sometimes known as 'Conisbrough Crags', sometimes as 'Denaby Crags'. The buff-coloured embankment across the valley is 'Cadeby Crags' - the scarp slope of the Lower Magnesian Limestone. The site of the former Cadeby colliery is just in front of Cadeby Crags. Cadeby village is on the distant skyline at (0.2, 0.6). The disused buildings of the Earth Centre are at the extreme left (0.05, 0.5).&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;br /&gt;
Pegswood Flash at Coney Garth, near Ashington, Northumberland. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
This is a flash created by mining subsidence - the land has sunk down owing to the gradual collapse and compaction of old coal mine workings at depth, and then subsequently filled with water, as the former ground surface now lies below the water table. Hence the hegderows and fences disappearing into the water. The River Wansbeck flows past here about a half-mile away.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
It is now well-known locally for its bird life. &lt;br /&gt;

&lt;br /&gt;
Although the general location is mostly known as Mynydd y Gwair, this name strictly applies to an area just to the north (left) of this viewpoint. The camera location is on Mynydd Garn Fach and is looking eastwards. The rounded hill in the centre is Tor Clawdd and the pock marks just below the skyline are remains of old adit coal workings in the Graigola seam. The Upper Lliw Reservoir is just out of sight in the valley below the woodland. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
This beautiful upland moorland area is only 7 miles north of Swansea city centre, but is now under threat of having an enormous windfarm sited here, with dozens of huge turbines. The planning application has yet to be approved. More details here:&lt;br /&gt;
