The owning trust have been awarded a sizeable grant to take Unicorn into dry dock [Dundee's East Graving Dock, itself recently restored] and carry out conservation measures and make repairs. This work is due to start in January 2026 ...

Actually, bees and butterflies ...
Tucked between two buildings, a small bee & butterfly friendly garden has been created and is also a suntrap and quiet spot for a rest.
{part of environmental-friendly measures - there's a woodland walk, as well}
The sign is in French - note that during WW2 there were Free French squadrons based here.

My impression of the planned "Great Green Wall" project is that this replanting is intended to improve the tropical rain forest cover and to reduce the southwards encroachment of the desertification ...
However, part of the success - or otherwise - will depend on measures to alleviate the sub-Saharan drought, including something man can't do ie make it rain ....

Progress with a few of the regional conservation initiatives - not all are reforestation programmes.
Sadly, most seem unlikely to achieve even these quite modest targets.

Following on from other initiatives, The Trillion Trees campaign dates from 2016, with the aim of planting trees to combat climate change. By 2021, 164 restoration schemes had contributed approximately 1.396% of the target. [probably an underestimate, as many small schemes are not included - like the 200+ trees and large shrubs I have planted ...].

Robin Upton, son of Ralph Upton. Ralph established Slindon Pumpkins and began the annual pumpkin display murals in 1968. The recent displays were designed by Mark Ford. Sadly, due to covid-19, the 2019 display was the last and Slindon Pumpkins is now closed.

Hemma of Gurk donated a chapel in "Grivinne" in 1043. The chapel belonged to the chapter of the Gurk cathedral in 1157 and around 1218 was the parish church Deutsch-Griffen.

The Romanesque structure was rebuilt as a fortified church in the 15th century, when it served as a refuge for the villagers during the Turkish incursions. Since then it is surounded by a wall. The Karner (ossuary) erected in the 14th century was used as a defense tower duirng that time.

Inside the church are some extraordinary frescoes, that were "re-discovered" under plaster in 1928. Most of them were created by a studio named "Villacher Schule", that existed from around 1440.

Some in a bad state conditions. The conservationist is working with painstaking care inside the freezing cold church. A hard job! Thank you!!
