I went for a last look at the Ratcliffe-on-Soar power station before it closes at the end of the month and was largely confounded by the weather. Over two days it was so murky and foggy that it proved almost impossible to see the power station unless very close. I ended up with a few shots of the cooling towers taken from the roadway outside the East Midlands Parkway railway station.

At the time only months from closure, the 2,000 Mw EDF owned coal-fired station at Cottam was hard at work when I last visited. Opened in 1969 it is now gutted and slowly being demolished.

The third Weiher coal-firedepower station was opened in 1976 with an output of 680 Mw which was later increased to 697 Mw. Originally it was supplied with coal from the nearby Göttelborn mine. Operated by STEAG GmbH the plant was shut down in February 2021.

Still generating in March 2015 but closed later that year was Ironbridge B power station which was commenced in 1963 and full 1000 MW capacity reached with the commissioning of the second 500 MW unit in February 1970. The cooling towers were deliberately constructed using concrete to which a red pigment had been added, to blend with the colour of the local soil. This added £11,000 to the construction costs.

Ferrybridge 'C' power station was closed in 2016. Operated by Scottish and Southern Energy plc this 2000 megawatt power station first generated electricity in 1966.

Seraing Centrale power station

This combined cycle gas power station was commissioned in 1994 and has a generating capacity of 485MW. Since 2014 the Seraing plant has been part of Belgium's strategic power reserve and is called on to generate electricity only at times of shortage. The station is currently managed by EDF Luminus but at the time I took the photo it was under the Belgian company SPE.

There were two power stations at Didcot - a 2000 Mw Coal/Gas fired station at Didcot A and a 1360Mw Combined Cycle Gas Turbine station at Didcot B. The A station has now been closed and demolished.
