School architecture of a certain age often has some lovely details, but photographing them can be fraught with danger in these times when using a camera in the vicinity excites suspicion and hostility.

Brierley Primary School in Crewe has an array of terracotta ornamentation on the buildings. In addition to the plaques over entrances for boys and girls, the gables have words of encouragement for the pupils. The boys side has 'Obey', 'Hope' and 'Duty', whilst on the girls side the mottos are 'Love', 'Neatness' and 'Order'.

It's just after 5.30am and I have alighted from the Highland Sleeper at Crewe after a journey from Aberdeen. 92 014 now awaits the road for London whilst most passengers continue to sleep.

Drivers exchange places in the cab of 92 014 during the 5.30am stop of the Highland sleeper service at Crewe. I had just 30 minutes to wait before catching the first morning service to Manchester.

Whilst heading for the station in Crewe I spotted this fine example of entitled parking. Never a parking warden when you need one. Quite likely to get scratched and damaged by passing bikes too.

Carpet centre on Mill Street in Crewe. The cream terracotta faience is unusual for the area. The building has a date of 1937 at the bottom of the black central rectangle. I wonder whether it was shops when built?

High above the streets of Crewe is this signing advertising a long defunct restaurant. In more recent times the building housed the Steam nightclub but is now derelict. I would love to know more about Kettell's but have so far found no information.

Abandoned remains of the Crewe Electricity Works. The bill containing the provisional order empowering Crewe Corporation to supply electricity received the royal assent on August 12, 1898, and supplies of electricity became available late in 1900.

This seven aisled building with north light roof was built by the Crewe Publishing and Printing company 1877 and was then bought by Coop & Co., Ltd after 1887 who began to manufacture clothes in the premises. In 1898 it was remodelled for the firm of W. H. L. Cameron of Manchester extensively and christened the "Marmion Works". Cameron sold the works to the Co-operative Wholesale Society in 1917 and production recommenced in 1918 and juvenile clothing became a speciality. Two extensions were added in 1931 and 1937-8.

I suspect that this corner building in the certre of Crewe was once a bank. The mix of olive terracotta at ground floor level and cream terracotta and brickwork above works really well.
