This image was taken in 2010 on one of my last ever rolls of Kodachrome 64. It was in the churchyard of St Mary the Virgin, Essendon, Hertfordshire. The first roll of film I shot on my first SLR was K64 in 1982 and those slides are as crisp now as then.

St Mary with St John, Hertingfordbury. Monument to Lady Katrina Cowper who played a major role in the late Victorian restoration of the church. The guidebook makes a point of the fact this monument "is not scheduled"!

Today was a "Single in September" theme day with the topic of "hidden". This cross is in the bushes in the corner of Ayot St Lawrence old churchyard. Pentax K-3, SMC Pentax "K" 35mm f/2 lens, processed in Silver Efex Pro II.

From Andrew Langdon, Stone crosses in North Cornwall, 2nd ed. (1996), no. 38:

"Maclean recorded that it had been removed from another site, possibly a field close by known as Cross Park... In the past it has evidently been used as a gatepost many times, as three holes in the monument show. The cross displays Greek type crosses on both faces, but they have been badly eroded by the elements."

Apparently it is 198 feet tall and 113 feet wide, forged out of over 180 tons of steel. One would have thought the money would be better spent helping the poor...
