'Tis the season. These three large does and two smaller yearlings were spotted in our town cemetery. When I first saw them, both yearlings were on top of the piles of soil. Kids and dirt - doesn't matter the species, if there's a pile of dirt, kids are going to climb it!

The doe on the left is the one I've been calling "goiter doe"; she has a large lump below her jaw. I suspect the doe on the right might be her fawn from last year. I don't believe this is the doe and fawn I've been seeing all year - I've seen the smaller doe around the same time as the doe and fawn, and that fawn still had spots.

It's been a while since these two have stopped in to see what's good in the pasture. At the edge of the field is an old apple tree, and the doe heads straight for it.

It's been a good winter for the local deer - no prominent ribs or hips means they've fed well this winter. They'll be a sight when they start shedding their winter coats, though.

Photo taken through double window panes, so not the greatest.

We've had between two and six deer yarded up in the area this winter. Usually it's a herd of four; two adult does with this year's young, but at times all six will wander through the pasture. They've been loving the low snow pack that's been allowing them to forage for acorns under the big oaks. The one to the left fascinates me with its color - I don't know that I've ever seen such a dark colored deer before. At dusk she almost looks black against the snowy backdrop.

I sold my house in the historic district and moved back into my childhood home with my mother. We have plans to build an addition onto her house for me and I'll be building a barn for the mules. Hopefully this is my last move. My new neighbor, here, Little Deer, is standing about where the corner of my new home will be.

I was almost home today and came around a corner to see what I thought was a dog running down the road. I stopped the car and immediately realized it was a fawn! Pulled out my camera and took a few quick shots as it continued to run right up to my car. Once it reached the car, it kind of looked a little panicked, then turned ran off into the woods. Hopefully Momma was close by. Never have I seen anything like this.
