The winding towers and coal bunkers of the Guangshan Mine at Beipiao viewed across a large area of workers' housing under demolition. The mine is now also abandoned.

Clarence Mills

The original Clarence Mills alongside the River Hull were built in 1888. Badly damaged by bombing in WWII they were rebuilt and continued to mill flour until 2005. In 2015 the mills were demolished to make way for a 23 floor hotel and casino.

Demolishing the melting plant at Staveley works. St Gobain solved the problem of a more efficient UK producer by buying the business and closing it down.

The 1884 Macclesfield gasholder was under demolition when I took this shot. It has now gone completely and the site is being prepared for development.

Macclesfield gasholders under demolition. The 1884 holder has had the tank removed and work is being done in the well before the stanchions are taken down some time in October. When completed this will allow access to the more modern holder behind which will be cut up by Christmas. There was once another gasholder on the site but this was removed in the 1970s.

Middleport is being demolished. This was Trubshawe Street and Bridgewater Street as the machines were well on with their work. The houses in the background facing onto Newcastle Street will be next to go.

Last rites for the headstocks at Welbeck Colliery today. It was sad to see the end of this pit, but at least it was because the reserves of coal had been extracted.

Back in 2007 I posted a single shot of the demolition of the boilers and powerhouse at the Winnington works of Brunner Mond, but thought it might be fun to make a composite image showing the whole blowdown.

The ferrous alloys plant at Glossop was always controversial due to the emissions from the very tall chimney that dominated the town. The landforms around Glossop are such that even such a tall structure did not mean that fumes were dissipated quickly. Today the production of Ferromolybdenum is long finished and the plant is being demolished.

Demolition of the boilers and powerhouse at the Winnington works of Brunner Mond. The coal fired power plant has been replaced by the gas fired CHP plant of which one chimney is visible rear right.
