Cleveland Street, on the side of Taylors Buttons. Dickens's first London home. "Young Charles Dickens twice lived in this house 1815-16 and 1828-31 a few doors from the Cleveland Street Workhouse" Erected by the Dickens Fellowship.

Dickens describes this in The Uncommercial Traveller: “The gate is ornamented with skulls and crossbones…wrought in stone; but it likewise came into the mind of St. Ghastly Grim that to stick iron spikes a-top of the stone skulls, as though they were impaled, would be a pleasant device. Therefore the skulls grin aloft horribly, thrust through and through with iron spears.”

This is where Bill Sikes dies in Oliver Twist -- he falls from the roof of a building here and dies in the mud. In Dickens' time, this spot, which he calls Jacob's Island, was utterly squalid. Today, it's -- what else? -- luxury condo conversions.

Bleeding Heart Yard features in the Charles Dickens novel Little Dorrit as the home of the Plornish family. Dickens wrote of it:

[It was] a place much changed in feature and in fortune, yet with some relish of ancient greatness about it. Two or three mighty stacks of chimneys, and a few large dark rooms which had escaped being walled and subdivided out of the recognition of their old proportions, gave the Yard a character. It was inhabited by poor people, who set up their rest among its faded glories, as Arabs of the desert pitch their tents among the fallen stones of the Pyramids; but there was a family sentimental feeling prevalent in the Yard, that it had a character.

You really have to use your imagination for this one. This is the site of the metropolitan police office where Oliver Twist was brought before the magistrate Mr Fang. Nancy also came here, at the request of Fagin, tapping the cell doors with her keys to try to locate Oliver.

Mr Bumble appeared in court here in Oliver Twist.

This is on the west side of Clerkenwell Green, which really isn't a green as it's paved over. In Oliver Twist, the Artful Dodger steals Mr Brownlow's handkerchief from his pocket by a bookstall somewhere around Clerkenwell Green.

It was on the steps of the old bridge that Nancy’s fateful meeting with Mr Brownlow and Rose Maylie took place in Oliver Twist. Here she betrayed Fagin, Sikes and Monks and was overheard by Noah Claypole. When Sikes learned what she had done, he murdered her at his house in Bethnal Green, not on the steps of the bridge, as the plaque on the wall (which I couldn't find) states wrongly.
