tacky fake ships in front of the 1995 failed commercial development that fills the tobacco warehouses beside the dock. there must be better more authentic ships that could take their place. the whole place is closer to camden market, than to covent garden, which was the supposed blueprint for renewal. someone tried to do it with little class or imagination and failed dismally, but the whole place certainly has possibilities, and someone will probably try again.

the knocker white was built in the netherlands in 1924, and has a funnel that can be lowered to go under bridges. she was for general towing work on the thames.
the varlet was built 1935 by pollock and sons in faversham, and was for towing barges within the west india and royal docks.

this is the floating church of st.peter, built into a steel barge , moored outside the museum of docklands, london . the warehouses in west india dock date from c.1800, and stored sugar, rum and tobacco as part of the triangular trade that included massive transport and use of enslaved africans. it is often forgotten that political prisoners from england were also sold into slavery in the west indies, though they numbered in the thousands, against the hundreds of thousands of africans.
