A male Norfolk Hawker (Aeshna isoceles) in flight over Rollesby Broad. This species is beginning to expand its range in Britain and has been seen around the south coast and even in Lancashire in the last few years.

Dodging the showers

Whilst out and about in the White Peak of Derbyshire we found this Southern Hawker (Aeshna cyanea) dodging the showers at Harboro Rocks near Brassington. On returning an hour or so later he had flown off.

Teneral Four-spotted Chaser seen today whilst out in Delamere Forest. There were dozens of these insects both flying and emerging.

Whilst I was eating my lunch this teneral female Common Hawker (Aeshna juncea) landed in an adjacent bush and was good enough to remain whilst I took a photo.

A newly emerged male Black Darter (Sympetrum striolatum) having just alighted after its maiden flight at a pool in Delamere Forest this morning. This is the earliest date that this species has been recorded on the wing in Cheshire.

It may be nearly November but there are still some dragonflies to be seen as the weather has remained fairly warm and we have avoided frosts so far this autumn. This male Southern Hawker (Aeshna cyanea) was busy feeding alongside the Macclesfield Canal at Middlewood.

Another view from the Church Minshull marl pit where this female Brown Hawker (Aeshna grandis) was busy ovipositing into the floating vegetation. This is a notoriously difficult species to photograph except when ovipositing as the adult males hardly land for more than a few seconds when on a territory.

The Ruddy Darter (Sympetrum sanguineum) first appeared in Cheshire in the early 1980s, probably indicating a change in climate. The species is now widely distributed across the lowland areas of the county. This pair were at a marlpit in Church Minshull.

One of Britain's scarcer dragonflies is the Common Clubtail (Gomphus vulgatissimus). In Cheshire it is only found along the River Dee in May and June, and even then you have to search hard to find it. This freshly emerged female was basking in the sun at Aldford.

With the sun shining out of an almost cloudless sky I decided to head for west cheshire in search of dragonflies. The best shot of the day was this female Hairy Dragonfly (Brachytron pratense) seen in a cornfield at Churton. I have been seeking a photo of this one for years, but the females are really hard to find apart from when ovipositing.

As soon as the sun came out this afternoon there was a Common Darter (Sympetrum striolatum) basking on the fence. This male was in good condition and soon chose my bald head as an even warmer place to sit for a while!

With the weather finally warm and sunny I headed for the west of Cheshire in search of Odonata and had a great day on the Dee and nearby marlpits. This male Four-spot was busy working his territory on a pond at Churton.

The visit to the marlpits at Churton saw lots of dragonfly action. Patience was rewarded when this male Hairy Dragonfly landed right in front of me and stayed around long enough for a few portraits.

The Blue Marsh Hawk (Orthetrum glaucum) is a common river dweller found across much of Asia. This male was resting at the roadside in north-east Myanmar.

One of the objectives of today's dragonfly excursion was to photograph the Ruddy Darter (Sympetrum sanguineum). This male was seen before the day became so warm that the insects became to flighty to approach.
