This grassed area - actually a wider extent to both left & right - was the area used for the 1991 Royal Garden Party, held in July. [Stand Down was in September 1991, although some ROC personnel were retained until 1995].

The area to the left had a table / parasol / gazebo for each Group, arranged in two "semi-circles" - the inner line - including 23 Group - received visits from HMQueen while the outer set met Prince Philip. We had to stay in our "Group area" until the Royal Party had left the next group along, but were not to pass the group they were with ...

To the right were the catering facilities, a large pavilion with cucumber sandwiches, strawberries & cream, plus liquid - non-alcoholic - refreshments for the "other ranks" --- a selected number of the more senior officers were invited to the Officers' Mess to take Tea with the Royal Party.

In the UK, March 2025 has seen a distinct lack of rainfall.
This will have repercussions if the warm weather continues - potential water shortages as aquifers / reservoirs have not been fully recharged over the winter and the increasing risk of wildfires.

Looks suspiciously like a drill hole ! {i'm comparing it to the capped off holes that were used when the "Old Quay" at Whitehaven was grouted, to stabilise the structure.

That is a 5ft section of a surveyor's ranging pole, that's not the deepest point. But five feet is about average overall.
It's a big hole ... estimate 15' x 15' and 5' deep - although it's not square in plan.
