600mm gauge electric locomotive at the Dalu coal mine in Hegang, Heilongjiang province, China. This is one of a number that were supplied to the Hegang Mining Administration from the (Shaoshan) Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Works (now CRRC Zhuzhou Locomotive) in Hunan Province.

The Volk's Electric Railway at Brighton is the oldest working electric railway in the world. It has been in service since 1883. It runs for one and a quarter miles along the top of the beach from the Aquarium Station near Brighton Pier to the Marina.

An icy day on the Fushun Mining Railway. This system serves the opencast coal mine and associated industry in the city of Fushun, Liaoning Province. This is a typical level crossing in the urban area where the trackbed is used as a dump for much domestic rubbish. The line of ice parallel with both sides of the left track is cause by water dripping from coal wagons passing this way.

The locomotive (617) heading the empty coal train is a 1500v DC electric which came to Fushun from the Maoming oil shale mine in c2001. It was built at the Xiangtan Electric Locomotive Factory, Hunan, in 1988.

A load of empty spoil hoppers is hauled over a level crossing on the Fuxin Mining Railway. The motive power is one of the three unit overhead wire electric locomotives supplied by LEW of Henningsdorf in East Germany in 1960 and 1961.

I went for a day riding the the Merseyrail trains across the entire 75 mile network. This included taking one of the new Class 777 units to the new terminus at Headbolt Lane, Kirkby.

The station is the terminus of the current Merseyrail service to Kirkby, having opened on 5 October 2023. It also has a third platform that is the terminus of Northern services towrds Wigan. There is an 80 space secure cycle area, a bus interchange and a 270 space car park.

The new trains operate between Fazakerley and Headbolt using battery power and elsewhere on the Merseyrail network using the third rail to supply electricity.

Gearbox

Final drive gearbox for one of the hybrid CBD90 Bo-Bo locomotives being built in 2020 by Clayton Equipment Ltd at Burton-on-Trent for Tata Steel at Port Talbot. Electric drive is powered by a large bank of lead acid batteries which are charged by a Deutz diesel running in the front compartment.

Further ordershave since been gained from Tata Steel and also for two Hybrid+ CBD80 locomotives for Sellafield. A further order has been agreed Beacon Rail Leasing for the supply of 15 more CBD90 locomotives along with options for a period of three years.

Each electric loco weighs 90 tonnes and is capable of pulling (or pushing) loads up to 2,500 tonnes.

230 008 arrives at Neston on a run to Wrexham Central. A ride on this battery powered train, using heavily modified ex London Underground stock, was smooth with rapid acceleration from the several stops. There are many seats in fours with tables and all seats coincide with windows (praise be!). These units are not yet proving very reliable and another unit had failed on this line earlier in the day. The other services on this route were being worked by a Transport for Wales class 150 unit.

This class 331 electric unit was waiting to depart from Blackpool North with a service to Hazel Grove. After taking this photo I was harassed by the staff who really don't like photography at this station and they insisted I returned to the concourse. The barrier remained closed at departure time and those who hadn't nipped round by another entrance to the platforms were left behind! You couldn't make it up.

Coal loading

At the loading point for the 900 mm gauge electric railway connecting the Vreoci opencast coal mines to a large washery. There were 17 locomotives in service with the oldest dating back to 1942. The maximum speed of all electric locomotives is 30 km/h. The trains consist of 17 self-discharging wagons and the weight of a loaded train is 800 tons of which 500 tons are coal. Locomotive No.4 was built in Belgium by Haine St. Pierre/BBC in 1952.

The Vreoci coal mines belong to the state-owned Kolubara group which was established in the mid-1950s. There are four open cast mines: B, D, Tannav and Istokzabad. They have two power plants. The Verikicrljeni power plant is connected to the mines by an electric 900 mm gauge line, whilst the power plant in Obremovac is connected by an electrified standard gauge line. The total output of all mines is about 25 million tons of coal per year. Of this amount, 21.5 million tons is for the two power plants, and the rest is for sale to other consumers.
