It was moved to Bursledon in 1896-97 and remains in situ and is run regularly.&lt;/div&gt;</description>

It was supplied and erected for the South Staffordshire Waterworks Company by Jonah and George Davies of Tipton and completed in late 1873 after their business had ceased trading. This atmospheric winding engine worked for just over 100 years and in 1915 it was presented to Glasgow Corporation for preservation. After many years in storage the engine was loaned to the Summerlee Heritage Trust at Coatbridge and in the 1990s what remains was largely re-erected as an exhibit at Summerlee Heritage Park. Whilst in storage it is regrettable that various parts had been lost including the legs that supported the beam which required a new steel frame to be fabricated. Today this engine is one of only three remaining rotary Newcomen engines, with the other two being in the Henry Ford Museum at Dearborn. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The operation of these atmospheric winding engines must have required great skill and today nobody knows how it was done. Perhaps one day a replica will be constructed which will allow us to understand the techniques required.&lt;/div&gt;</description>

This was one of the first pumping engines to be erected on the Worth colliery and was certainly in use in 1793 when it was just known as Worth Engine. It was probably erected for Peter Downes of Shrigley who was the owner of the Manor of Worth and it was sold to Sir George Warren, with the Manor of Worth and associated collieries, by his son Edward Downes after his father's death in 1791. The engine was of the Newcoment atmospheric type and drained workings in the Four Foot and maybe the Five Foot seams in this part of the estate. &lt;br /&gt;

By 1826 the pumping had been moved to a Boulton and Watt type engine at the bottom of Anson Road. The Old engine Pit had been abandoned along with the Clayton Pit on the other side of Coppice Road which was used for winding coal. At that time all that remained was the engine beam in 2 parts, arch heads, beam gudgeon with pedestals and the carpenters shop at the Old Engine.&lt;/div&gt;</description>

The 2400 hp winding engine was made by Grant Ritchie &amp; Co Ltd, Kilmarnock. It is twin cylinder horizontal with 42" diam steam jacketted cylinders, 7' stroke, and Cornish drop valves. The winding drum is 20' diam and 10'6" wide and was replaced by Andrew Barclay Sons &amp; Co in 1964. The brakes were also replaced by Barclay in 1953.&lt;/div&gt;</description>

The bucket was 25.625 inches and the ram 17.175 inches in diameter by 9 foot stroke, and once developed 190 hp at seven strokes a minute, whilst pumping water at the rate of two million gallons per day with a delivery head of 355 feet on the force pump. It was supplied and erected for the South Staffordshire Waterwoks Company by Jonah and George Davies of Tipton and completed in late 1873 after their business had ceased trading. The engine finished working in 1927.&lt;/div&gt;</media:text>

In addition to the winding/capstan engine beds underneath the tree there is the arched boiler house and the building that housed a Cornish type beam pumping engine. The shaft is sunk through sandstone and shale and ultimately reached 1092 feet in depth. The pumping engine was made in Sheffield by Davy Brothers and installed in 1863. It had a short working life, being stopped in 1868. It is said to have been removed in 1884.&lt;/div&gt;</description>

As in the case of the earlier de Havilland Super Sprite ATO Units for the Vickers Valiant bomber, the Spectres for the Handley Page Victor and the Avro Vulcan were carried in two jettisonable and recoverable nacelles (pods) under the aircraft s wings between its jet engines. The Spectre and the nacelle were designed to withstand very high 'g' loads and rough handling. Each nacelle houses a Spectre complete with tanks for oxidant and fuel. The nacelle structure is of riveted light-alloy construction There is a basic floor above which are mounted the tanks, engine and recovery parachute while below is contained the air-bag used for cushioning impact with the ground after jettisoning.&lt;br /&gt;
Immediately behind the spun nose -cap of the nacelle is the large oxidant tank compartment. The bay has an inner metal skin to provide smooth boundaries for the polythene bag-tank containing the HTP (hydrogen peroxide) oxidant This tank is filled via the removable nose-cap, and a polythene supply pipe passes through the bulkhead at the rear to feed the engine. Aft of this bay is strapped the small kerosene tank (the ratio of HTP to kerosene used is about 9:1) and four nitrogen bottles which pressurise both kerosene and HTP tanks, thus supplying inlet pressure to the propellant pumps.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Above the kerosene tank is the parachute compartment which houses a glass-fibre pack containing a 36ft diameter parachute (designed to give a rate of descent of 25ft per sec), a 4 ft diameter pilot canopy and an extractor gun. The Spectre is canted down at an angle and exhausts through an orifice in the rear of the nacelle. Below the floor in a central compartment is the air-bag which is enclosed by plywood doors coated with Nutracote, a finish compatible with HTP. As the nacelle is nose -light when the propellants are exhausted, stub wings are fitted on each side of the nose so that the nacelle is pushed down on jettisoning.&lt;br /&gt;

On the engine's sides are various control valves and associated linkage systems, the starter unit and fuel-cooled oil cooler. A small high-speed turbine energised by a separate supply of HTP is employed for driving the pumps and the associated decomposition products from this unit are subsequently directed through the combustion chamber. The high flow of HTP is able to cool the nozzle before it is injected into the engine (known as regenerative cooling)&lt;br /&gt;

This compressor house to supply the air was erected some distance away where there was a spring that supplied water to cool the oil engines and compressors. The structure has been secured and the roof is sound but it stands empty and unused.&lt;/div&gt;</description>

An exhibit in its own right as an example of patternmaking, it is a dimensional replica of what would be the starboard unit in the two-Spey engine room of, for example, a Type 22 frigate of the Royal Navy and gives an accurate representation of its layout. Its final use at Ansty, however was to facilitate its projected installation in a large hydrofoil ferry for Sweden. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The SM range originated in a M.O.D.-funded design study in 1972 for an engine of a size between the Olympus TM and the Tyne RM, although at that time no application existed. Development started in 1977 and the engine selected was the Allison TF4IA licence-built Rolls Royce Spey as being the latest uprated Spey available, used in the Vought A7E Corsair strike aircraft of the United States Navy. In addi¬tion to being marinised the main modification was the cropping of the fan section of the LP compressor and redesign of the casing. An en¬tirely new control system was also developed by Lucas. Depending on the application, power ranges from 14,750 BHP (11 Mw) of the SM1A to 20,800 BHP (15.5 Mw) of the SMIC and could be further uprated. Its specific fuel consumption is almost half that of its predecessors. The first two SMIA production units, built and tested at Ansty, were installed in HMS Brave "type 22 frigate in 1983 in place of the originally specified Olympus TM3B. The Marine Spey was installed in 21 frigates of the Royal Navy combining with Tyne RM3C (Type 22) or diesel electric (Type 23). It was also be used in 8 frigates of the Royal Netherlands Navy and in 12 destroyers end 6 frigates of the Maritime Self-Defence Force of Japan. In the Asagiri class of destroyer, the Japanese reverted to the original concept of the Spey providing all the propulsion power, in this case 4xSMIA. However, in common with most of its overseas defence procurement, Japan manufactured under licence the Spey SM series and other Rolls-Royce machinery.&lt;/div&gt;</description>

A vertical blowing engine by Adamson of Manchester was erected in 1868 in this building. The venture was not very successful and went into voluntary liquidation in 1879. The company continued to trade under supervision for a few years before final winding up in 1889. Subsequently in the ownership of Chatterley Whitfield Collieries Ltd the last furnace was blown out in 1900.&lt;br /&gt;

The empty blowing engine house stood derelict until the 1980's when it was demolished during the construction of a new road. Another fascinating relic lost to progress.&lt;/div&gt;</description>

This is the largest surviving steam engine in the UK, generating 12,000 horsepower, and was used to roll armour plate for warships at thicknesses up to 18 inches. Steam remained in use for these large rolling jobs for so long due to the speed that the engine could be reversed for another pass of the plate. The engine is still steamed and run daily at the museum and is recommended to anyone with an interest in heavy engineering.&lt;/div&gt;</description>
