Despite the name on the bench this is Loughborough station! The Great Central Railway is a heritage line that runs to Leicester but before it was closed as a main line in 1966 by BR it used to run to London Marylebone via Rugby. The bench was saved for preservation when that station closed.

The steam locomotive behind is Hudswell Clarke 0-6-0ST Robert running as 68067.

HBM to everybody. Enjoy the start of the new week.

Wiki tells me : "The Little Engine That Could" is an American folktale existing in the form of several illustrated children's books and films. The story originated and evolved in the early 20th century, but became widely known in the United States after publication in 1930 by Platt & Munk. I just thought it was a nice railway story & didn't fully realise I was teaching my kids to work hard...

Lots of happy pyjama-ed kids.

I don't know what cut the franchise takes but the Churnet Valley Railway must be minting it over the Christmas period with all trains fully booked.

USATC S160 2-8-0 5197 was heading the train with an unidentified Class 20 diesel on the tail. As this is the southern terminus of the CVR the configuration was reversed when they set off back towards Leek.

We had about 25 minutes to wait before departing with the 11.40 freight to Swithland which gave me plenty of time to make a brew in the porter's room and then prep the fire. This view offered itself on the way back.

Despite there only being one person in this view the station was actually rammed with photographers and passengers.

With Callum's help I cleaned out the remains of the previous day's fire and coaled up the grate for today's fire.

Here the 9F waits to be lit up in the early morning darkness. There was still 20psi pressure in the boiler so we were ahead of the game & she came round pretty quickly.

Stanier Black 5 4-6-0 45305 is coming round on shed. We had signed on to prepare Black 5 45305 for its one trip of the day on the 13.20 diner so had plenty of time.

With the fire, pressure and water in good shape this gave us plenty of time to drop down & take a few shots of the loco. With a very high ISO (& little bit of help from my torch) 73156's smokebox stands out from the darkness.

If you're not keen on tinsel-bedecked locos you are not going to like BR Standard 9F 2-10-0 92214 lit up like this for the Winter Wonderlights trains! I think it looks brilliant and has certainly appealed to the public - every train to Christmas was fully booked. The GCR needs every penny that they bring in after such a debilitating year.
