This was a tour train run to farewell the 55cl locos. 5597, the last operational one, was run in combination with 3803 as in this photo in the cutting on the Down side of Fassifern. Also the 55cl was paired with a 60cl and as a triple header with a 50cl and a 53cl.

As part of the 140 years of railways in NSW State rail ran this train each day one week from Sydney to Newcastle and return. This shot is of a Newcastle bound run at the top of the 1 in 40 (2.5%) grade up from Fassifern station. This is a place I spent time at in the last days of steam a quarter of a century early than this shot. A 'one last time' I never expected.

A V set EMU Sydney bound service at the top of the 1 in 40 (2.5%) grade up from Fassifern station. This is a place I spent time at in the last days of steam a quarter of a century early than this shot.

The railfan could still travel with the guard as a passenger on a steam hauled train even though steam hauled passenger services had ended. The loco is working hard on the 1/40 grade.
