The final 3d print of the macro flash diffuser has now been completed.
Printed in PETG plastic. This has a little flexibility so is not as brittle as PLA.
First time printing PETG. This was not an easy task and caused quite a bit of frustration. Cleaning up of the parts took quite a while and caused one or two swear words on the way ( I may have even invented a few new swear words when I managed to cut myself during the cleaning process). ;-)
Added a hood to bounce a little more light in front of the lens. All that is left to do now is to paint the outside faces black. The diffuser lens is printed with clear PLA and is removable so I have the opportunity to change the level of diffusion if required. The three parts are a friction fit so no glue required. Taken a couple of test shots with this and the results are not looking too bad.
The real test will come when I can find a shiny insect to photograph.
Finally, the diffuser weighs in at 400g but feels quite good on the camera.

The next version of this diffuser will be printed in black with a different type of plastic. The current version uses PLA plastic which is very hard and can be brittle. Also PLA is not UV protected so will be weakened with constant exposure to sunlight.
The front of the diffuser (white section) is a press fit with a piece of white cotton cloth behind it for diffusion. I plan to make the next version out of translucent plastic with a frosted finish. This will still be a push fit so that I can adjust the textured finish to get the best possible diffusion.

This is still very much a prototype version.
As I had never used a 3D printer before I just used the filament that came with it.
This version was printed to verify that my dimensions were correct.
The support onto the camera lens is there to align the diffuser and also protects the foot of the godox flash.
I have already had to replace one of these in the past as they are made of thin plastic and not very strong.Currently there is a hole and two notches in the support so that a zip tie can be used to hold the diffuser in place. The next version will probably be changed to a velcro strap. The blue section was not intentional, I run out of filament so used what was available to finish the print.

Recently I posted an image of the macro flash diffuser that I had designed for my camera.
All insect photos that I have posted since were taken with a prototype diffuser that I had made from cardboard and duct tape.
All works well but was never going to last for long. About a week ago I was walking around a car boot sale with my wife when she spotted a 3D printer for sale. A deal was done with the seller and I came home with the printer.
It was missing the printer nozzle and had a blockage in the extruder. Sorted out a new nozzle and cleared blockage.
After several teething problems, it all runs ok. This photo shows the diffuser during printing.
The vertical parts in the foreground are supports for the foot that sits on top of my camera lens.

I will post another photo of this when it is finished.
If I can find another camera I will post a photo of it fitted to my camera.

March windstorm blew around spring melt off a barn roof that flash froze. Lots if interesting ice structures created. Processed with Topaz DeNoise AI (+35v 20-Jan-23). Canon FD 200mm f/4 macro. In grayscale due to the incredible amount of PF in the lens.

I decided that it was about time that I got a macro flash diffuser.
So last night I dusted off Solidworks and designed one.

I made a rough model to represent the camera and flash head. Then designed the diffuser (shown in yellow) to fit around these.

Today I got up and made the diffuser from card and tape. Inside is lined with silver foil. The Godox flash has a magnetic diffuser attached to the front of it. Test images to follow.

No, not a spring as such. That is actually rainwater draining out of a mole hill on the fell, after several hours of heavy rain. It was almost dark when this image was captured, flash used.

A Vintage Photos Theme Park photo for the theme of steps, stairs, staircases.

This is a real photo postcard of young women standing on the steps leading up to the entrance of a building. They're wearing uniforms with scarves or neckerchiefs, and the banner they're holding simply says, "Flash." In the corners of the banner are what seem to be drawings of stylized top hats. Peeking out from below the banner are two pairs of what might be athletic shoes.

Although someone over on Flickr amusingly suggested that this might be an early example of a flash mob, I suspect that these young women belonged to a club or sports team at a high school or college. But I'm not sure what "Flash" meant to them or why the top hats -- if that's what they are -- appear on the banner.

The Dunes are So Close but Mostly Hidden!
Even though this park is situated right next to a massive sand dune area which stretches for 40 miles, you'd never know it if you weren't aware of the surroundings. The soil is very sandy, true, and when it's open, there is a sandy ATV road which leads out to the dunes and the tracks leave heaps of sand in the road. But otherwise the forest and hills completely hide the dunes! Only when you get out to the lake and look off to the side do you see the dunes. It's the most peculiar thing and I was amazed at the dramatic change in scenery from sand to forest.

Today's Picture
Each morning I strolled through the vast campground (Oregon's 2nd largest with over 350 sites!) and in one part, there's a little trail leading along a nearly-dry stream and past a campsite. One day it was empty so I took a closer look. Next to a pine tree I found this beautiful group of Forget-Me-Nots! Because the lighting was so low, I decided to come back the next day with my macro lens and flash for a proper picture. It rained during the night and I was delighted to see the droplets on some of the petals!

Today's Insets
Inset #1: The first image shows a trail that leads along the dunes for a short stretch. Even though you only have to walk across the sand for five minutes or so, it's too much! I eventually altered my daily walk to avoid this section because I tired of the arduous, slippery sand and needing to sit down and shake the sand out of my shoes and socks!

Inset #2: One of the trails takes hikers to a different lake situated a ways from the main campground and if one has the time, it leads to a deep and magical forest! It was a highlight every time I went!

Inset #3 Blossoms were everywhere to be seen in the lovely explosion of Spring's flower show! High in the trees or next to the dirt, adorning bushes and dressing up patches of grass, I loved every floral sight I found!

Inset #4: Of course there were mushrooms too! This one I found nestling in a vibrant patch of moss, and I had fun looking for them every day.

Inset #5: Plenty of critters to find as well, I noticed this spider web shining in the light and was very happy to find its artist waiting for a meal to arrive!

Well, we are shut in. However, we were able to get out and get some In-N-Out burgers by going through the drive-thru.

Fancy lunch, we put the burgers on plates.

Yes, that's the REAL Dr. Pepper for lunch.

Seit Anfang Juli hält hier nun schon die Hitze und Trockenheit an. Am 04. Juli wurden mit 35°C und am 07. August mit 36°C Spitzenwerte gemessen. In dem Zeitraum kühlte es sich nur zwei Mal auf ca. 20°C ab. Die Temperaturen stiegen aber kurz darauf wieder an.

Heute Abend zog nun eine Gewitterfront durch. Geregnet hat es bis jetzt nicht. Ein paar wenige Tropfen haben die Erde noch nicht einmal richtig naß gemacht. Das kann man nicht als Regen bezeichnen. Wenn man den Wetterprognosen glauben schenken darf, soll es sich aber ab dem Wochenende abkühlen. Und dann soll es auch mehr Niederschlag geben.
