Part of our recent trip to Norway was a hike to Trolltunga (Troll's Tongue). This popular hiking destination is east of Bergen and we spent a day hiking there. This native orchid was one of the wildflowers we saw along the way and I've identified it as Gymnadenia conopsea, the Chalk Fragrant Orchid.

This Purple Gentian, Gentiana purpurea, was photographed along the Trolltunga trail in Norway. Trolltunga is a popular hiking destination near Bergen.

Engelmann's Prickly Pear

These Prickly Pear flowers were photographed along the Tonto trail in Grand Canyon National Park as we backpacked into the canyon. I believe this is Opuntia engelmannii, Engelmann's Prickly Pear.

Common Spotted Orchid

This, I believe, Is the Common Spotted Orchid, Dactylorhiza fuchsii. We saw many of these on Black Mountain when we hiked there, but this photo was taken at Castle Espie, a nature reserve on the shores of Strangford Lough. We visited there last week Friday.

Eastern Fairy Slipper

This is one of three orchids we saw along the trails as we backbacked in Mount Assiniboine Provincial Park. It is the Eastern Fairy Slipper, Calypso bulbosa var. americana, found from the Rockies to the east coast.

Frog Orchid

While backpacking in Mount Assiniboine Provincial Park we saw three different orchids. This is the Frog Orchid, Coeloglossum viride. When we saw it, there was not enough light for photos, so I've used and older photo from another nearby trail.

Western Pasque Flower

The Western Pasque Flower, Anemone (Pulsatilla) occidentalis, is found in the western United States and Canada from Washington and Montana northward. It is one of the earliest wildlflowers to bloom, often showing its flowers through the snow. This example was photographed near Sunburst Lake in Mount Assiniboine Provincial Park in British Columbia.

On another note, my postings will be sporadic until the middle of August. We leave within a week first for Northern Ireland and then for Norway. I'll post as I have opportunity, but do not know what kind of internet access we will have while away.

This is Lewisia pygmaea, Alpine Lewisia, photographed along the Wildcat Canyon trail in Zion National Park. The Lewisias are named for Merriwether Lewis of the Lewis and Clark Expedition.

Haven't been able to get on the site for a couple of days, but things are better this morning. The flowers are of the Sticky Geranium, a common wildflower in the west. The photo was taken in Logan Pass in Yellowstone National Park.
