These bales have been taken to be indicative of cloth or wool merchants, but with no proof, and it seems more likely that they are a stone version of the shape of the mediaeval hearse cloth. I know of no paper written that has tested either theory by looking at the families involved.  Note the early norman herringbone walling behind the tomb&lt;/div&gt;</description>
