This sign has been deciphered by my friend Jane www.janeslondon.com/2024/03/the-historic-topography-of-royal-hill.html and Roy Reed ghostsigns.co.uk/2018/04/roy-reeds-reconstructions. It appears to read:

Frank Ison’s shop, 47 Orford Road E17 – A traditional corner shop originally with a stable at the rear erected in 1902 by Frank Ison, and remaining in use by the family until the 1990s. Still in largely original condition externally, with particularly fine shopfront and fascia. Locally listed. Now a clothing store.

This is a piece of public art in Hoxton Street made by Bob and Roberta Smith (the pseudonym of artist Patrick Brill) in 2006 as part of the Shoreditch Festival whose theme was Shop Local. There were originally five similar works, but I think only two survive today. More info here.

The building (doors, shutters) are Georgian but the painted sign on the fascia is only a few years old (and rather naff). J.H. Lee sells upscale home furnishings.

Ezra Street near Columbia Road. This one took me a while to decipher and work out. It reads:

FLAT ROPES
HAWSER SHROUD
& CABLE LAID
WM HOCKNELL & SONS

On Google Maps, you can see that the building behind the sign is long and narrow, so that must have been the ropeworks. Hawser-laid, shroud-laid and cable-laid are types of rope.

According to Ghost Signs: A London Story by Sam Roberts "David Levy ran his lodging house here between about 1905 and 1917. The sign represents a time when women made up a large proportion of the workforce, but had difficulty in securing housing. Records of the 'hotel' show that thirty women occupied ten rooms in a mixture of cubicles and dormitory accommodation. These women were employed in a variety of trades, including a piano teacher, a necktie maker and a newspaper seller."

According to Ghost Signs: A London Story by Sam Roberts "Bernard Wittick was here from at least 1922 until 1939. The sign is more visible now than in a 1957 photograph, probably the result of whitewashing and repointing the wall at different stages. The lower portionis especially clear, allowing the details and colours of the drop shadows to be seen. A former Islington councilor, Peter Powell, sought to have this sign locally listed but, at the time of writing, it hadn't made the list."
