The sign represents a time when women made up a large proportion of the workforce, but had difficulty in securing housing. Records of the 'hotel' show that thirty women occupied ten rooms in a mixture of cubicles and dormitory accommodation. These women were employed in a variety of trades, including a piano teacher, a necktie maker and a newspaper seller."&lt;br /&gt;

The sign is more visible now than in a 1957 photograph, probably the result of whitewashing and repointing the wall at different stages. The lower portionis especially clear, allowing the details and colours of the drop shadows to be seen. A former Islington councilor, Peter Powell, sought to have this sign locally listed but, at the time of writing, it hadn't made the list."&lt;br /&gt;
