More granitic monoliths in the Blue Mass Scenic Area in extreme eastern Nevada. Here the light is better! The blue flowers in the foreground are lupine (IIRC).

Silhouetted granite monoliths in the Blue Mass Scenic Area, in extreme eastern Nevada. The granite has a bluish cast, at least when not too oxidized, due to its mica content. The insets show some other views in the vicinity. Alas, I didn't get many pix due to limited time!

Glacially polished granite, with striations still visible, where the trail follows a bench on the way down to the base lodge for the Squaw Valley ski resort. Looking pretty much south; lift towers on the ski resort are locally silhouetted on the skyline. The gnarly tree in the foreground is a Sierra juniper, somewhat smaller than others I've photographed!

En route from the Pacific Crest Trail down to the Squaw Valley ski resort's base lodge, visible in the valley in the distance. The trail here crosses a bench of glacial-polished granite with striations even visible here and there. The splash of yellow paint on the rock to the right marks the trail. The inset is a view a bit more to the right, showing more polished granite with striations.

View northward from near Eagle Rock Spring, in the so-called "Lava Beds", Pershing County, Nevada. In fact "Lava Beds" is a misnomer--the rock is heavily jointed granite that weathers into knobs, spires, hollows, caves, and even the occasional arch. I have no idea how the name got applied!

An extraordinary natural arch in heavily jointed, cavernous weathering granite. The insets show a couple of different views, one showing more of the surroundings, and the other a silhouette taken from the other side. Pershing County, Nevada. Anywhere else this would be a park with interpretive signs and entry fees; here it's just out in the middle of nowhere, accessible only by Jeep roads.

High point (9654 ft/2943 m) of the House Range, in the Basin & Range of western Utah. Looking north from Highway 6-50. The cliffs are composed of metamorphosed limestone from cooking by a granite body, the edge of which is just visible on the skyline at left (the pinkish outcrops). Somewhere I saw it asserted that the cliffs here are the tallest in the Great Basin, but I haven't been able to track that claim down. I did a bunch of field work here back in the late 70s. Contact metamorphism of a limestone is a classic setting for tungsten mineralization, so there was a big network of prospecting roads coming in from the east side, which led to better access than you might expect. Dunno whether they're all shut off now, tho--

House Range, western Utah, USA. Looking east. Metamorphosed Paleozoic sedimentary rocks form the cliff, which has been claimed to be the tallest in the Great Basin. The pinkish outcrops in the foreground are of the Jurassic granite that caused the metamorphism.
