HFF! It's going to be another heatwave day here, so I opened all the windows to get the early morning breeze. Unfortunately the local farmer has chosen today to fertilise his fields, so now the house smells of hot manure :-(

Animals About Town have brought a couple of sheep, two goats [neutered males], some chickens, a rabbit and a few guineapigs.

The two goats were apparently rescued via a vet --- and were quite happy to nibble hay & grass. Beautiful long, soft coats and no billy reek.

A countryside view from Nut Hill in Gloucestershire; a small hill managed by the Woodland Trust.

It lies close to the commuter village of Upton St Leonards and is only three miles from the centre of Gloucester. Along with mixed native broadleaf trees, varieties of nut tree including hazel and walnut have also been planted, reinforcing the wood's name.

HBM - a photo from the overcast day out at the Purton Hulks ship graveyard on the river Severn (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Purton_Hulks).

Paul Barnett, a local historian, has documented a lot of research about the hulks, and has campaigned to provide them some form of protection from complete destruction. As a result, the vessel in the background - the Kennet barge Harriet" has been scheduled as an ancient monument, and included in the UK National Register of Historic Vessels". This is why it has a fence around it.

I set a new personal record yesterday. It was a sunny afternoon, so we went to the grounds of Gloucester University in Cheltenham where there is plenty of wildlife that is reasonably habituated to humans.

I set the camera up in fast burst mode with precapture, to make sure I didn't miss any action. After a couple of hours, I came home with 5800 images! It'll take hours to go through and delete most of them, but as you can see, some of the wildlife was extremely photogenic!

Update - I added another couple in PiPs.

Canalside Bench

HBM! I'm just in time... here's a bench from our afternoon walk, looking onto a lock along the Stroutwater Navigation canal.

At the moment, the canal terminates a little further down, but work is underway to reconnect it to the main canal, River Severn, and the rest of the UK's canal system.

I enjoy feeding the garden birds and thi is one of my regulars. We have a few feral pigeons that visit, but this one has noticed that I'm more generous with handouts than my wife.

If I'm out in the garden, he'll fly down expectantly, and if I don't immediately reach for the peanuts he'll make a point of flapping around at head height to make sure I've noticed him.

Here he is in his natural habitat... filling his crop with free food!

Spotted just off the A689 [Alston to Brampton] on our way to Hickins' for some food.
The fence is also providing somewhere to hang the hay !
The hay patch on the ground has two sets of lambs and one ewe, the other mum is the one much closer to the camera.

First lambs I've seen in 2024.
