Glowing Green Leaves at Beverly Beach State Park! (+6 insets)

Canopy of Green
When reading about popular campgrounds in Oregon, Beverly Beach was one that came up a lot. People jumping up and down about how beautiful it was. It's one of those places that, if you don't sit on the reservation window when the sites become available, you won't get to stay there. We were really happy when we got a full two-weeks reservation because it's true, Beverly Beach is GORGEOUS! I couldn't believe the greenery everywhere, it was like a rainforest!

Today's Picture
Right next to the prehistoric-looking bog that I shared in my last post, my attention was drawn to this lovely tree with large leaves. The leaves were so pretty that I spent a while just staring, moving my position and looking again to appreciate the glowing leaves and beautiful textures of the veining. This image will give you an idea of what I was looking at! (I don't know what kind of tree this is…do you know?)

Today's Insets
Inset #1 : Each morning I watched the trail carefully because quite often there would be a Rough-Skinned Newt making its rounds. They didn't move very fast and blended in with the trail so I watched for any movement as I walked along. Here was one of the little cutie-pies I happened upon, along with a close-up so you can see its face better.

Inset #3: As you can imagine, such a lush and moist forest was a perfect environment for fungi and they were all over the place! Steve discovered this moss-covered trunk that was covered with an entire village of little mushrooms! Aren't they grand!

Inset #4: One of the unusual features of this park was the great number of trees with these fabulous roots! They formed such large cage-like areas that I would often find clusters of children playing inside, giggling when I spotted them!

Inset #5: The deep shore of Beverly Beach seemed to go on and on at low tide. On this grey and stormy day, I thought it was interesting how the receding waves seemed to entice me to follow them out to the ocean. Yikes!

Inset #6: This is very close to the end of Spencer Creek, where it empties out into the Pacific Ocean at Beverly Beach. I loved looking at the waving grass under the clear water but this image, though pretty, cannot capture the mesmerizing sight.

I appreciate your visits, comments and stars more than you know. I fight with my feelings of guilt for not returning the favor and am still dealing with issues regarding anxiety but I'm getting more days that are better. It's a slow road. Today is the first day of February and spring is fast-approaching! I hope you all have a super week with signs of new growth and maybe even a crocus or two!

Lovely Walks at Harris Beach State Park
My morning routine is to get up, shower, have my coffee and vitamin mix, and pop out the door for a walk which is ideally three miles or longer. Yet another reason this park is so perfect is that I designed a walk which is 3.5 miles and full of plenty of cardio, along with jaw-dropping scenery. I almost always take my phone with me, but sometimes I bring my Canon with 100mm 2.8L lens for some macro fun, and other times I bring my Sony bridge camera for zooming in on wildlife or fun activities that I find along the way.

Today's Picture
This lovely unfurling fern was just one of the masses of glowing spring growth that I saw everywhere on my walks. It's November as I post this, but it was the beginning of April when we started our trip and I really enjoyed seeing what budding springtime was like out on the coast.

Today's Insets
I got so many wonderful pictures with all three of my cameras while we were here! Today's handful of insets include a lovely mushroom, a pair of colorful ivy leaves, a playful collage showing a Mountain Chickadee, a bunny that I saw many times on my walks, and finally, a weathered whale skull mounted on a stand visible along one of the campground loops.

A View of Little Qualicum River Through Moss-Covered Trees! (Set 2 of 2) (+6 insets)

Trip Talk: Big Qualicum River, Qualicum River, Little Qualicum River…WHAT?!
When I put our itinerary together for this area of Vancouver Island, I knew that Little Qualicum Falls was a spot we must not miss. Wow, what an understatement…it was GORGEOUS! And with all of the fuss over Little Qualicum Falls, I expected to see lots of information about Big Qualicum Falls too. I do remember being a bit confused about the deal with Qualicum River while we were in the area and now I've finally figured it all out!

It turns out that the indigenous Qualicum people had two rivers named after them in that area--the Qualicum River and the Little Qualicum River. To make matters confusing, the Qualicum River is usually called the Big Qualicum River. The location of these two beautiful rivers is within 10 miles of each other. Little Qualicum originates from Cameron Lake and empties out into the ocean just north of Qualicum Beach at the southern end of Qualicum Bay. (Big) Qualicum River originates in the hills beyond Horne Lake, spills out the other side and empties out into the ocean at the north end of Qualicum Bay. To make this clear, I have included a topographical map inset which shows the two lakes and the paths leading to the ocean. It's nice to have this straight in my head! :)

Today's Pictures
I originally planned to show another magnificent view of Little Qualicum Falls as my main image. However, the image that gets first billing is a glimpse of the river through a quartet of glowing, moss-covered trees, surrounded by verdant greenery. It gives an very nice understanding of how rich and lovely it was in the forests of Vancouver Island.

The first inset is the image of Little Qualicum Falls dumping down into a log-wreathed pool in tones of teal and aqua. It was incredible to stand at the edge of the chasm and appreciate that awesome sight. It's also no wonder there is fencing erected all along this area…too many irresponsible selfie-junkies out there and they kept falling of the ledges!

The second inset shows a tree-accented view of the colorful water as we headed up to the falls. Inset three shows a log panorama covered with carefully-stacked prayer stones. At that particular spot there were piled prayer stones all over the ground, in small and big groups--they were everywhere! Unfortunately the many grey piles of stones blended together, so the pictures really weren't showing how cool they looked. Until I saw this rock-covered log! I knew it would be just right to show that spot and it turned out as I'd hoped!

My other insets include tree shadows on a pool of water and an abstract, blurry image of a fellow jumping off a ledge into a deep pool--his girlfriend had just jumped and though he was visibly nervous, he threw caution to the wind and followed suit. Neither of them were hurt but I couldn't stop thinking about my older brother who once jumped off a rope swing into a river and didn't realize the water level was too low…he broke his left femur and was in a cast for three months!

Pam, what is the health like of the forests where you live? Dry and ailing like ours? It's really incredible to visit a place where the forests are simply glowing with good health. We do have plenty of healthy forests here in southern Oregon--the ones that border rivers and streams are fine--but areas without a constant source of water are definitely not doing as well with the slow increase of heat over the years we've lived here. It didn't hit home until we spent a lot of time on Vancouver Island. Oddly enough--distressing to learn as well--the amount of moisture on Vancouver Island has decreased over the years as well. Lower rivers, less rain, more stress-related tree problems…even though it seems like their forests are in perfect shape, climate change has been affecting them too. We are happy that we've gotten to visit this place before the damage has become obvious. *sigh* Well, I hope that your day is going well…here it started off chilly with twinkling frost and bright sunshine and promises to warm up and continue to be fabulous and beautiful! *many HUGSSSSS and happy tidings!*

Steve and I were busy today doing errands and that's kept us out rather late. While we were driving around we talked at one point about how things are changing for us...

You know when you travel for a couple of weeks and you come back and it seems like nothing has changed at your home but you feel like a different person? We are now back after our second trip of four days/three nights away. It doesn’t seem as if that should be enough to make a difference, but it really has. We feel as if our lives are morphing into something new. It is an odd kind of feeling but nice too.

Having an RV is giving us a freedom we have never experienced before. We have gained the ability to go wherever we want--and we get to bring our dog and parrot with us. It's a way to travel in a relaxed manner without a time frame if we decided to just wander. After dreaming for so long and saving our pennies to make it happen, it's such a strange sensation to recognize that we are actually reaping the rewards of our efforts. We are a bit shocked to be honest. At the same time, we are incredibly thankful for our good fortune.

Today's picture was taken on our last evening when Steve and I went on a long hike so I could take pictures along the way. As we were heading back, the light in this meadow was just so incredible that Steve and I just stood there and appreciated the view in front of us. How the leaves glowed, the grass shimmered, and the way the shadows streamed across the scene. Pure magic.

We'd planned on hot-footing it out to the lake to take pictures of the sun setting behind the forest and hills but decided to take the advice that so many have stated: stop hurrying from one thing to the next. Enjoy the moment. So we abandoned our initial plan. Our quick boogie to the lake became a slow stroll back to our camp with lots of pictures as we went. There will be other sunsets but the pretty sights we were seeing now deserved our attention, appreciation and enjoyment. We certainly made the right decision and both of us had a lovely time!

I am also including pictures of some ferns taken with my Sony (taken from the bridge in my last picture!) and a bumble bee resting under a stalk of flowers. (Anyone know what they are called?)

Pam, I totally loved what you said in my last picture's comments, "The marvelous difference it makes to be able to stay and grow into a place. New insights." You are so completely right about that and it's how we feel! There are so many things in this world which must be experienced in order to understand. That understanding takes a bit of time to settle into as well. Ok...we can do that! *BIG HUGS from southern Oregon!

I've just returned from a chilly but bright and sunny morning walk and my body is ticking with energy coursing through my veins. How vitalizing it is to get some invigorating exercise at the beginning of the day. It really makes me feel motivated and ambitious. After all, I've done something so good for my health and well-being at the very start. What better way to set yourself up for a series of wins, progress, achievements and successes?! Besides all of that, getting outside when the world is waking up around you is a wondrous experience with the twittering of birds and their songs and calls heard from near and far. It is a joy I missed out on for so many years. How lovely to get up early enough to be immersed in this daily marvel.

Sitting down at my computer, I hop onto ipernity and check out the Explore section. Who is showcasing today?! Gazing at the selection of 27 pictures on the front page, I sit in wonder. So much talent. Such a vast variety of photography. The creativity boggles the mind. Pictures from literally all over the world, in all types of formats, from a dizzying variety of cameras. Exquisite images from seasoned professionals and from budding talent as well. Some have such a wonderful, recognizable style that you can tell who took the picture without glancing at the name. Others are unique and exciting and beg for a click so you can see what other pictures they've taken. Inspiration drips from the page.

How grand to be part of it all. The community at ipernity is incredible. Wonderful, warm, intelligent folk who, like the pictures on Explore, cover a vast range of personalities and interests. Photographers can be very quirky and plenty of us spurn society for a gamut of reasons. But here on ipernity we can reach out and make friends. Isn't that wonderful. In my "real" life, the "in-person" friends I have fit onto one hand, perhaps two if I include family. But online, my friends and acquaintances number much closer to 100 or more! What a difference! In "real life" I am shy and very wary of people, but online I am extremely friendly and gregarious. Isn't it all so very interesting? I am extremely grateful to have the chance to be friends with people from all over the world, all walks of life, and who allow me the chance to know them. It is an honor and a true gift and I thank you all for allowing me to be part of this fine platform! *BIG HUGS TO ALL OF YOU!*

Today happens to be St. Patrick's Day so I'm posting a picture that's very green! This fern was photographed in San Francisco a couple of years ago. Steve and I walked through part of Golden Gate Park to get to the Conservatory of Flowers' dahlia exhibit and on the way we stopped to take pictures of some of the fabulous plants found there. Ferns of many kinds grow everywhere and this one did not miss my gaze. (I'm also including some other green images for you to enjoy!)

Pam, isn't it wonderful to be a part of this amazing group of people?! We are so lucky. And because of ipernity, we got the chance to meet…how cool is that?! :) Anyhow, I thought it would be fun to find a nice green picture on your stream and decided on a wonderful picture of a Ruby Throated Hummingbird sitting in a vibrant green oak tree. What a beautiful bird with her iridescent green feathers! It really is fun doing searches in your photo stream--it shows me how few I've actually seen and then I get the prize of appreciating them!

It's been pouring cats and dogs since last night and hasn't stopped coming down. Steve and I drove into Medford to do our shopping and though the driving conditions aren't great, it's given us the rare chance to witness actual flooding. For the first time in a couple of years, our area is overly saturated with water and turning pastures into ponds! The volume of water is pretty amazing to see. We're supposed to get precipitation for the next week so it will be interesting to find out what happens.

Right now I'm cuddled up in my bed with blankets tucked in around me while I type up my post. I like to go into our bedroom to write so I can concentrate without distraction. Steve and I have a pair of computers set up in our game room but it's hard to focus if he talks to me or makes too much noise and the perfect solution is to write in a quiet space.

I keep looking outside because it isn't raining anymore...it's SNOWING!! I'm watching huge, heavy snowflakes fall to the ground and instantly melt. Not long after we got home, Steve exclaimed loudly, "It's snowing!" And indeed it was...small, wet flakes at first, but now they are much larger though still very wet. It's mesmerizing to see the different sizes of flakes and to check if the snow is sticking yet. We hope that it will...that would mean more fun photography opportunities! It is exciting to see so much snow coming down, it's so beautiful. (Alas, it has returned to rain, but I did include a panorama inset of the snowy hillside across the valley from us…it's high enough for the snow to stick up there but not down here!)

Well, today is MACRO MONDAY!! The theme this week is "Belongings" but I have renamed it, "What Has It Got In Its Pocketses?!" After all, no Hobbit-loving person would ever resist such a perfect opportunity to quote our dear Gollum! :D

For my project, I kept an eye on the different things that I had in my pockets over the week...rubber hair scrunchies...lens clothes...my phone, which fits into a large pocket on my pants...Blistex...camera lens cover...pecans and seed treats for Pumpkin...tissue...lint...heh... I chose my favorites and if you read my post yesterday, you'll know that I had a great time and was very late posting my pictures because I lost myself in creative bliss! :D

The main picture shows a green lens cloth and you'll see a black one as an inset along with rubber hair scrunchies and my phone in its well-worn case and also a pair of images of the phone screen. What fun...I sure do love these projects that have me photographing totally different stuff! (Oh, I also included a second panorama about 15 minutes later than the first one...look at the difference!)

Pam, since it's been raining nonstop, I looked in your photo stream and found a beautiful picture of a droplet-covered Snowdrop! It's so pretty but the story you included is its match. Thank you so much for sharing the reason that you love these flowers so much. And did you know that I was also an 8-month baby? What a surprise--another thing in common! Here's a big *HIGH FIVE* and a *HUGGGG* as well!

There's a big storm brewing in southern Oregon...I looked outside this morning and found ominous signs of heavy clouds overhead. Last night I read a report that warns of heavy snowfall over 2,000 feet for the next few days. We are at 1,500 feet though and it's doubtful that we'll get snow. But the forecast does suggest snow probability for the next week. Who knows. Predicting the weather is such an iffy proposition.

Although it wasn't horribly cold (32 degrees) I did my 15-minute minimum walk this morning and dashed inside before I was overly affected by the temperature. It's nice to retain feeling in my fingers and toes! I did managed to take a picture of the storm clouds and you'll see this as one of my insets today.

I spent a very pleasant morning visiting contacts here on ipernity and then I finished up some sporophyte and moss pictures I'd taken a couple of days ago. Isn't it wonderful to find lovely subjects in unusual settings? The combination of sporophytes, moss and snow was very exciting to me. Even better, many of my pictures turned out well! Even though I do my best to post quality pictures, I'll be the first to say that I delete piles and piles of images for every one that is a "keeper." Those pictures are crisp, have proper focus and the potential to be an eye-catching image when I'm done with it. Sometimes I'll work on a picture and realize that it's not worth the effort to process. More rarely, I'll go to delete a picture and discover that it's actually quite special. I love that. So often we are taken by surprise at our pictures!

Today's image is something unusual...I call this one Kung Fu Moss! As I was cruising around taking pictures of sporophytes and bits of snow, I kept my eyes open for moss that I could capture. I was hoping to find something different and interesting and then...look at that! This moss was growing in such a unique way and I loved its funny shape! I was reminded of the classic kung-fu stance with arms up, legs spread and ready to leap into action!

Pam, I was reading about left-side neglect today...I am guessing that the exercises they suggest haven't helped you at all? I wonder if, over time, you will find improvement. I sure do hope so. The only thing that's happened to me where I can relate to you in this regard is the optical migraines I get sometimes (I haven't had one in a few years). They only happen when I am under a lot of stress and very exhausted. I become aware of a rapid shimmer in my vision that becomes more acute over about 10 minutes. I then notice that my peripheral vision is just GONE. It's terrifying, especially the first time it happened because I didn't know what was the matter with me. This blindness lasts for 30-45 minutes but usually doesn't include a headache at all despite the name of this affliction. Whenever this happens to me, I immediately stop what I'm doing and go to bed. I take an hour-long nap and when I wake up I'm ok again. The difference is...yours isn't going away. It really sucks, Pam. I hope that you will eventually get your sight back...I feel so sad for you my dear friend. *big, big HUGGGGGGS* My thoughts go out to you.

Wonderful, wonderful Hosta, this gorgeous ornamental plant is grown primarily for its large and beautiful foliage. This type, with green leaves and white edging, is more common, but these plants are found in a number of lovely colors and combinations, including solid green in different shades, yellow, green and yellow, and all shades of green and white or green and cream.

I took this picture at my friend Elaine Sweet's garden. I got another image as well, and if you would like to see it, just roll your mouse over the upper left corner of this image.

If you're not a gardener, you may not know that many plants selected in a garden are selected for their greenery or other vegetative displays, and not for their flowers. Hostas are very popular for their variety of leaves, colors and patterns. They do have dainty flowers to admire, but the show is truly their beautiful greenery. My friend Elaine, who lives in nearby Ashland, had several of these lovely plants in her garden when I visited a few years ago, and I was delighted at the opportunity to capture their stunning leaves. (If you'd like to see a nice product page which shows nicely presented images of hosta varieties, take a peek at White Flower Farm's Hosta page! Wikipedia has a nice page as well but you'll enjoy seeing all of the pictures a lot more! :)

One of the cool things about mushrooms is how unique they can be up close. Towering above them, mushrooms appear nearly identical to one another, but through a macro lens, the differences are distinct. I think this one looks like an umbrella, nestled against a trio of grass blades.

We have a very pretty wildflower that grows profusely in this area called Vetch (Several varieties including Common and Hairy). It's in the legume (pea) family, which means it's a climbing plant. Climbing means TENDRILS and anyone that knows me, knows how much I love them! Almost exactly a year ago, Steve and I went on a photo walk along the Rogue river and I found a patch of vetch climbing whatever it could find...in this case, it was clinging to a blade of grass! :)

I had a wonderful time growing flowers from seeds, and I especially loved growing Morning Glories! I adore climbing vines with their tendrils clinging to everything. There are so many interesting ways they attach to things they encounter. Even the beginning of a vine is wonderful to look at, with its gleaming, hairy green face peering out to see where it might find a place to begin winding and sending out tendrils!

Steve and I were invited to visit our friend's beautiful garden a few years ago and upon entering, I was transported into photographic bliss! Not only did she have countless flowers in immaculate condition, there were lovely ornamental greenery plants as well. This is a magnificent frond from one of her gorgeous ferns.

What a delight to find a sight like this! Looking around in one of our meadows, I happened to see a seed from a Redstem Stork's Bill that had sprung from its seed capsule and landed on some wild grass. Here it was, suspended for now, until a strong breeze jostles it free to tumble to the ground. There it will hopefully find purchase and sprout the following spring!

Towering over this clump of wet moss, you would notice the sparkle of water droplets but it wouldn't really look like anything special. Isn't it amazing how the view changes when you crouch down with a macro lens and get a really good look? Tiny droplets become huge, and the moss is a lawn of glowing green! It is incredible to think about all the things there are to see in the world when you have a macro lens!

If I were to ask you, "What is most beautiful about a Morning Glory?" I think most would say its stunning flowers. But I think the perfect, heart-shaped leaves are also beautiful and deserve a bit of attention as well! I found a perfect arrangement of blossom and leaves to make a square format image which fills the frame with two of the forms I I love about Morning Glories! :) I grew this flower in my raised bed garden a couple of years ago and enjoyed months of stunning blossoms!

Did you know that this flower is also called a wild carrot? While the roots are young, they are edible but become too woody as they mature. I love the flowers, which really do look like lace, don't they?! :) I think the opening buds are very alien-looking and interesting to look at. Our property is covered by oak forest which is divided by a large meadow. There is a huge variety of plants and animals to photograph, and with a macro lens, there is no end to all of the subjects to discover and capture. One of my favorite types of plants are the lichens, and we have many that grow here. I love these shrubby lichens, and their name, "Fruticose," means "shrubby"! :)
